01.General Information


UNIVERSIDAD DE ANTIOQUIA, is the most important academic institution of higher education in the department of Antioquia and, having been founded in 1803, is also the oldest state University in Colombia.


The University of Antioquia is one of the most prestigious institutions in the country and has received institutional accreditation from CNA (National Accreditation Council) on September 5th 2003, for a period of 9 years; together with the University of the Andes, it is the institution holding the second highest accreditation period after the National University of Colombia.


The creation of the University of Antioquia dates back to the colonial time; for two centuries the institution has been the Alma Mater of Antioquia and its history is also the history of the region and of Colombia itself. Initially founded as a College of Franciscans, it was later developed into an institution for higher education that at the time was mainly focusing on Grammar, Philosophy and Theology.


The Faculty of Engineering is an academic unit within the University of Antioquia, it was founded in 1943 and it is located in the city of Medellin. The Faculty is dedicated to the study, research, production and application of engineering knowledge for the education of professionals. The Faculty is located in the University City and in blocks 18, 19, 20 and 21 focuses most of its activities.


Part of the Faculty of Engineering is the Centre for Environmental Research and Engineering - CIA which was created on March 25th 1975, by the Superior Agreement n. 7. Its creation was motivated by the need to respond to issues related to the conservation of the environment as well as its improvement, the promotion and development of studies related to the methods of measurement and control of pollution and the demand for advisory, consultancy and technical assistance services to solve specific problems.

The University of Antioquia has agreements with various international organizations and educational institutions in Europe, America, Asia and Oceania. Some of these institutions are: the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, the University of Bielefeld, La Trobe University, the University of Brucella, the University of Alcalá, The French Government, the University of Stockholm, the University of Buenos Aires, the University of Montreal, the Agrarian University of Havana, the University of Chile, the Boston University, the University of the Andes, Santa Maria Cardiovascular Clinic, Coldeportes, Corpoica Dane-Fondane, Fundación Universitaria San Martín, the Ministry of Foreign Trade, the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana.





The University of Antioquia is public institute which, in full exercise of its autonomy, it is committed to the integral education of the students, following the principles of excellence, the generation and dissemination of knowledge in the various fields of knowledge and the preservation and development of cultural heritage.
