Special Focus: Romanian Industry |
The political and economical situation of Romania after the fall of communism in 1989 was largely defined by the totalitarian regime of the decades-long rule dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, who took power in 1965, and remained in it until 1989 when he was overthrown and executed. The oppressive and draconian regime combined with the economical policy that the Romanian politician adopted in the 1980s had as a goal the repayment of the national debts, deteriorated both the economical and political cohesion of the Romanian society. Additionally, the aforementioned actions created a deprived socioeconomical status quo that complicated the first steps of the Romanian economy towards the creation of a market economy.

Romanian Economy during the Economic Recession
Throughout its economic history after the fall of the communist regime, Romania has been progressing positively.
It was just few months ago that the growth prospects for the GDP in Romania were rather optimistic and several international and national forecast institutions predicted that GDP growth will be much above the EU-Average for 2009 and even onwards. Unfortunately, the aforementioned estimation was not reaffirmed and after the breakout of the financial and economical crisis GDP growth estimations for Romania were gradually downscaled. The economic activity was sharply declined in the last quarter of 2008 and has fallen further in early 2009. But what intervened and the diffused optimism was not finally reaffirmed?

The Impact of European Integration on Regional Structural Change and Cohesion, by Christiane Krieger-Boden, Edgar Morgernroth and George Petrakos.
In 2007, with the accession of Bulgaria and Romania in the European Union, the second round of the Eastern enlargement of the European Union has been completed. Undoubtedly, the aforementioned fact is important for the European Union and the countries that have been integrated. By using extensive empirical analysis the three editors focus on the effects of the European integration process on the inter-regional division of labour in both western and Eastern European countries. The result of the research, which is displayed in the book, is of high quality and this is the reason why the book will be of great interest to post graduate students and researchers interested in international trade and regional economics as well as policy makers engaged with regional and structural changes at both the European and national level.

Towards a Romanian Silicon Valley? Local Development in Post-Socialist Europe, by Eniko Baga
After the fall of the communist regimes in the Eastern Europe the countries of the region adopted a new economical, political and social structure. Under the context of these developments several economical entities tried to be transformed and integrated in this new reality. The author by focusing on the small Romanian town of Timisoara examines the aforementioned phenomenon. The residents of the town respond to major national and international changes, including the dismantling of an authoritarian regime and Romania’s admittance to the European Union in 2007. As Baga illustrates, such shifts provide powerful opportunities for local communities, as they learn to use their own economic, social, and cultural resources to enact political change.
