Compounding Series Offers Important Lessons for Pharmacy Professionals

BROOKFIELD, Wis., June 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A new four-part continuing education collection from OnCourse Learning offers pharmacy professionals a wide range of compounding knowledge.

"The Modern Pharmacy Laboratory Series" provides a solid foundation in pharmaceutical compounding and also helps meet the educational requirements for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the state of Massachusetts. The courses are available via OnCourse Learning's ContinuingEducation.com website.

"Compounding is the root of all pharmacy," said Esther Kim, PharmD, who serves as director for continuing pharmacy education for OnCourse Learning, a leading provider of healthcare education. "The earliest forms of pharmacy were hand compounding from natural herbs, barks, roots and minerals. As a training tool, these courses are very valuable."

The series is 7.0 contact hours and includes the following topics:

-- Part 1: Regulating the Modern Pharmacy Laboratory
-- Part 2: Essentials of Pharmaceutical Compounding
    -- Part 3: Compounding Calculations
    -- Part 4: Compounding Demonstrations

The value of compounding, according to Kim, is for patients who are not able to take medications in their manufactured form or have special dietary needs, and for veterinary medicine.

"You could have patients who are young children or elderly and can't swallow pills," she said. "Or you might have patients who have altered levels of consciousness or don't have working GI tracts. That's where pharmacy compounding enters the picture."

The first course offers a review of federal and Massachusetts state regulations that are key to pharmacy compounding practices.

The second course focuses on standardized terminology related to pharmacy compounding, reviews requirements from the United States Pharmacopeia Chapters 795 and 797, and discusses important topics related to special equipment and personnel training.

Calculating quantities and ensuring strong math skills is the focus of the third course. "This can be very handy for pharmacy students," Kim said. "Generally, students learn pharmacy calculations very early in their education and then the knowledge fades. With math, if you don't use it, you lose it."

Video demonstrations are a critical aspect of Part 4. The course provides examples of techniques for sterile and nonsterile products and provides useful tips for compounding formulations accurately and aseptically.

"We've invested the time and the resources to make this training accurate, sophisticated and very modern," Kim said. "This will give pharmacy professionals the knowledge they need to get started in a compounding pharmacy on day one."
