Plume Secures $37.5 Million Funding Led by Comcast to Accelerate Adaptive WiFi(TM) Deployments

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Plume Design, Inc., the pioneer of Adaptive WiFi(TM), has secured $37.5 million funding from new investors Comcast Cable, Samsung Venture Investment Corporation, and Presidio Ventures - an affiliate of J:COM, Japan's largest cable operator. Existing investors Liberty Global, Shaw Cable, and Jackson Square Ventures also participated in Plume's financing round, bringing the total equity funding in the company to over $63 million.

The investment will be used to accelerate the deployment and integration of Adaptive WiFi(TM) in Internet Service Provider (ISP) networks and third party hardware, introduction of new products, and for Plume's expansion in Silicon Valley and Europe.

Tyson Marian, Vice President of Strategic Development at Comcast Cable has joined Plume's Board of Directors.

"Delivering fast and reliable connectivity in every corner of the home with an intuitive user experience is a key initiative for operators" commented Tyson Marian of Comcast. "We see Plume's cloud-based approach as a core ingredient of our own Xfinity xFi platform: secure, no-configuration and cost effective whole-home connectivity that can be offered and managed at scale," continued Marian.

In December 2016 Plume launched a disruptive new approach that drastically improves the reliability, consistency, and coverage of in-home WiFi. At the core of Plume's offering is Adaptive WiFi(TM), where decisions on WiFi channel, frequency, client connections, and whole-home coverage topology are decided both in real time and preemptively by the Plume Cloud. Plume Adaptive WiFi(TM) can also manage and optimize performance across multiple apartments simultaneously in a Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU) environment, an important consideration for ISPs. Multiple tier-1 operators around the globe are in the process of rolling out Plume.

Comcast is working with Plume to combine the technologies of Plume and Comcast's recently launched Xfinity xFi platform. Later this year, Comcast will launch no-configuration, adaptive xFi Pods that can be auto-paired with either the xFi Wireless Gateway or the xFi Advanced Gateway, which will improve throughput and consistency to individual devices and provide even easier and more seamless whole-home WiFi coverage. Outside the home, Comcast's WiFi network has nearly 17 million hotspots spread across U.S. homes, businesses, and outdoor locations.

The Plume Cloud service which enables WiFi performance optimization is accessed via Plume Pods or Plume's software Agent embedded into third party hardware such as ISP wireless gateways and modems, wireless set-top-boxes, WiFi access points, OTT media players, IoT devices, and consumer electronics.

"We are excited to be partnering with Plume" said Chanwoo Park, Vice President of IoT Product Strategy, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. "Samsung will actively collaborate with Plume to deploy advanced WiFi connectivity to our upcoming IoT devices," Park continued.

"Almost three years ago Plume set-out to reinvent home WiFi, simplify device connectivity, and bring disruptive innovations to IoT security - we started with a clean sheet of paper, and ended up with the world's first self-optimizing WiFi solution as a key milestone," Fahri Diner, CEO and co-founder of Plume commented. "We are thrilled that some of the world's most innovative operators and consumer brands are now backing our vision and technology."
