OmniVision's Latest 16-Megapixel Sensor with PureCel®Plus-S Technology Takes Smartphone Imaging to New Heights

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- OmniVision Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced the OV16B10, a high-performance, power-efficient and high-resolution image sensor designed for the next generation of flagship smartphones. Built on OmniVision's second-generation, 1.12-micron PureCel(®)Plus-S pixel architecture, the OV16B10 sensor features high full-well capacity, high-sensitivity imaging and phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) to deliver industry-leading performance to both single- and dual-camera applications.

"Differentiating camera features is one of the best approaches for smartphone manufacturers to stand out and satisfy the demand for improved functionality and performance over previous smartphone generations, as consumers rely more and more on their phones for capturing and sharing life's moments," said Leland Tsai, senior product marketing manager at OmniVision. "This is what drives us at OmniVision to continue innovating and improving upon our portfolio of image sensors and technologies."

Designed for main cameras in flagship smartphones, the OV16B10 provides an attractive upgrade option for phones in the currently popular 13-megapixel category. With advanced features such as PDAF and zigzag high dynamic range (zHDR), the OV16B10 delivers professional-grade images that consumers typically associate with DSLR cameras.

PDAF is faster and more accurate than the conventional contrast-detection autofocus approach, making it the popular autofocus choice for premium smartphones. The OV16B10 implements a new PDAF architecture that improves sensitivity when compared with previous generations of PDAF technology. This allows the OV16B10 to have accurate autofocus in low-light conditions.

The OV16B10's zHDR technology extends the dynamic range capabilities of sensors by using a long and short exposure in a single frame. When compared with traditional frame-based HDR techniques, the zHDR has increased dynamic range with minimum ghosting artifacts. This enables live preview and video recording in HDR mode, as well as single-shot, full-resolution HDR images in capture mode without shutter lag.

The OV16B10 has a built-in feature that synchronizes the frames and supports context switching when it is used in dual-camera configurations, supporting image fusion while simplifying camera system architecture. Additionally, the OV16B10 features a gyro interface that reads and synchronizes the motion data from an external gyroscope to enable precise image stabilization for video and still capture.

The OV16B10 supports multiple resolution and frame rate configurations, including:

-- 16-megapixel images and video at 30 frames per second (FPS) with zHDR
    -- 4K2K video at 60 FPS
    -- 1080p video at 120 FPS
    -- 720p video at 120 FPS

The OV16B10 is currently available for sampling and is expected to enter volume production in the fourth quarter of 2017.
