Janus Global Operations briefs Canada's Minister of International Development on work in Iraq to eliminate ISIS-placed explosives and booby traps
WASHINGTON, July 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A demonstration of types of booby traps left in Iraqi cities and land by retreating ISIS fighters was part of a briefing given by Janus Global Operations (JGO) in Erbil to the Canadian government's Minister of International Development.
Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, Global Affairs Canada, visited the JGO training site outside Erbil earlier this year. She was briefed on the work being done under a U.S. State Department program - in which Canada is participating - to neutralize ISIS-placed explosive devices and the training program enabling Iraqis to help eliminate such threats from their country.
Canada is contributing financially to the State Department program helping to combat ISIS through eliminating the explosives it puts in place to kill or injure civilians and soldiers.
"Minister Bibeau's visit enabled her to see first-hand what Canadian funds are helping to pay for as part of this U.S. State Department program against ISIS," said Matt Kaye, JGO chief executive officer. JGO is the world's largest demining and explosives mitigation company, in addition to its other stability operations services. JGO is engaged in the clearance effort through the State Department's Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement conventional weapons destruction program.
During her visit to JGO's training center, Minister Bibeau was shown various types of booby traps and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) JGO has cleared from formerly ISIS-held territory as well as initiators and triggers used to detonate the devices.
Another component of the briefing was JGO's Train the Trainer program, through which Iraqi first responders and community leaders are trained in procedures to help identify IEDs and other hazards. This work assists JGO in locating and physically clearing explosives and helps to promote community safety.

Minister Bibeau was also shown a demonstration of mine detection dog capabilities to discover explosive devices and JGO techniques used to eliminate IEDs and other dangers.
