Increasing investment in transport infrastructure

Fast and efficient road transport network facilitates transportation and access to industrial, educational, and commercial zones in a city. This allows businesses to prosper and add value to the domestic economy. Increasing investment in highway and road construction and transportation systems is suggestive of economic development in both developing and developed economies.

Neelesh Prakash Singh, a lead research analyst at Technavio, says, “Developing economies such as India and China are improving their road transport efficiency by road widening, improving connectivity to both remote and nearby destinations, and enforcing stringent traffic regulations. Developed economies have already established an efficient transport infrastructure, however, the need for upgrading and improvements are always addressed. Projects on transport infrastructure development have a direct positive influence on the demand for road studs and delineators as they reinforce road safety and help reduce road traffic mishaps.”

Increase in road traffic accidents

Roads are among the primary line of communications that connect destinations across a city, region, country, continents and so on. A marked increase in vehicle traffic has been noticed worldwide, which has led to an increase in road traffic mishaps with some causing death to individuals.

“With public safety on roads gaining prominence, the demand for road studs and delineators is likely to increase. Delineators can absorb high-speed impact and when affixed along the perimeter of a roadway will prevent severe injuries to motorists in case of collisions. As these are raised pavement markers, placing them along the roadway will improve visibility from a distance and help prevent vehicle crossing central reserve or drift to the opposite carriageway. Road crashes often occur at intersections due to obstruction of view of an oncoming pedestrian or vehicle from around the corner,” adds Neelesh.

Regulatory standards for road safety equipment

There are certain regulatory standards for various road safety equipment. For instance, the relevant regulations and general directions applicable to road markings and any type of road stud are set out in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD), which are applicable in the UK.

The relevant standards applicable to road studs are BS EN 1463 Parts 1 and 2. BS EN 1463 Parts 1 and 2, both a harmonized standard that applies to passive road studs. These standards make it mandatory for passive road studs to carry a CE marking. Also, the replacement of road studs must be in compliance with TSRGD and BS EN 1463. For road studs to be effective, they should be clearly visible to road users during dimly lit conditions. Their effectiveness is the measure of the amount of light reflected back to the road user with a minimum of scattering.
