This research report titled ‘Global Aircraft Fuel Systems Market 2017-2021’ provides an in-depth analysis of the market in terms of revenue and emerging market trends. This market research report also includes up to date analysis and forecasts for various market segments and all geographical regions.

The rise in global economic stability and the increase in disposable income played a major role in increasing the air passenger traffic. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), commercial aircraft will support four billion passengers by 2017, driven by the increasing number of domestic passengers from China followed by Indonesia, India, and the US. This has led to a simultaneous rise in the number of commercial aircraft, which will lead to an increase in the fuel systems market, especially in APAC by 2017.

Fuel injection

The fuel injection system is an important component of an aircraft engine, which ensures proper flow of fuel. The performance of the engine highly depends on the performance and reliability offered by the fuel injection system. The systems not only maintain the engine functionality but also improve the economy of fuel usage and reduce carbon emission. This will accelerate the growth of the global aircraft fuel systems market during the forecast period.

According to Avimanyu Basu, a lead aerospace components research analyst from Technavio, “Injection systems offer advantages, such as less setup time, increased fuel burning efficiency, smooth running of the engine, reduced fuel consumption, an accurate amount of fuel flow to all cylinders, increase in mileage of the aircraft, and greater adaptability to alternative fuels. The system measures, supplies, and optimizes the fuel consumption, thereby increasing the lifespan of an engine. Although carburetors are cheaper than fuel injection systems, they have a shorter life and are difficult to repair.”

Pump feed

Fuel pumps are used to feed fuel into the engine from fuel tanks. The most common fuel system of this type is the pump feed fuel system, in which each tank has a pipe connected from the outlet to a selector valve. However, the fuel can be fed from only one tank at a time. Once the fuel gets depleted from one tank, the pump starts drawing fuel from the other tank. As the fuel is not strained from both tanks at the same time, there is no need to connect the vent spaces of both the tanks.

“Fuel pumps exert a certain amount of pressure on the fuel initially to avoid the occurrence of vapor lock after the aircraft attains a certain altitude. A fuel system has numerous measuring units in aircraft with multiple tanks, resulting in a complex system of measurement devices, pumps, and valves, all working together to enable a constant feed,” adds Avimanyu.

Gravity feed

The gravity feed system is commonly found in high-wing aircraft with a fuel tank in each wing and is the simplest of all types. It is equipped with a fuel tank above the engine and a propulsion system, with a series of lines feeding the fuel from the tank to the engine under the effect of gravity. This type of fuel system does not use any pumps and has a simple shut-off valve system.

Fuel systems differ significantly from one aircraft to another owing to their different sizes and the complexity in which they are connected. In the basic form, a fuel system consists of a single gravity feed fuel tank, which is connected with the aircraft engine through a fuel line. Therefore, OEMs manufacture fuel systems according to the requirement of aircraft operators.
