The market in many of the developed countries, particularly in Europe and North America, is exhibiting a slow growth as these regions are moving toward a mature phase. However, the US is still a primary stakeholder in the global high capacity gas generator market due to abundance in the supply of natural gas that is expected to keep the market in the Americas alive.

Gaurav Mohindru, a lead analyst from Technavio, specializing in research on the unit operations sector, says, “The Americas, especially North America, is the biggest end-user of gas generators, globally. Natural gas generators have gained market share due to their popularity among residential users. Many industrial end-users in the Americas have also started using gas generators instead of investing in diesel generators. As gas generators are considered to be better than their diesel counterparts on the emissions criteria, it is predicted that the share of gas generators in North America will increase during the forecast period.”

Emerging alternative backup power equipment

Generators have been in use as an auxiliary power equipment for a long time in residential households. However, with alternative backup power equipment gradually emerging in the market and gaining popularity, the gas generator market, especially the portable gas generator segment, will be negatively impacted.

“The equipment, better known as the power pack, is marketed under various names. It comprises a large battery coupled with an inbuilt inverter. Sometimes, it also comes with AC wall plug-styled outlets and USB ports. The construction and operation of a power pack are simple. It consists of a DC battery whose output voltage is converted into AC voltage by an inverter. This supply voltage is sufficient for powering household appliances,” according to Gaurav.

Remote monitoring systems in power generators

HMS Industrial Networks, a Swedish company pioneering in industrial communication, has developed Netbiter, a remote management solution for power generators. Users will be able to monitor conventional generator set parameters such as oil pressure, the temperature of the engine, battery voltage, output power, fuel level, and runtime and revolutions per minute (rpm) of the engine.

Users can reduce the cost and energy associated with on-site service visits. Instead, they can use this software to remotely start and stop the generator located at the site from anywhere. Even alarms generated can be acknowledged remotely using Netbiter. Provision for alarm notification is present in case the fuel level reaches a certain limit or if there is an attempt of fuel theft at the remote site.

Energy delivery being revolutionized by bi-fuel technology

The fuel used in generators comprise a significant portion of the operating cost for many industries such as the oil and gas industry. With the increasing price of diesel over the years, industrial users are looking for an inexpensive alternative that serves the purpose and is cost-effective as well.

“Small-sized generators using natural gas as the fuel source are also quite affordable. However, high capacity diesel generators are priced cheaper. End-users owning diesel generators have been trying to find a cheaper alternative fuel without buying a new one. Thus, many vendors have now come up with engines that run both on diesel and CNG,” asserts Gaurav.

The key vendors are as follows:

  • Caterpillar
  • Cummins
  • Generac Power Systems
  • Kohler
