New Retractable Flood Protection System Developed by RSA Protective Technologies Will Prevent Billions of Dollars in Flood Damage

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- RSA Protective Technologies, LLC (RSA), a world leader in creating physical perimeter security solutions, is actively supporting a national agenda for managing and reducing the growing risk of extreme weather. The goal is to create a waterfront that is resilient, accessible and environmentally sound.

RSA has been awarded a number of patents for their revolutionary Movable Barrier Floodwall System(TM). The MBFS protects life and property in high risk flood areas with a quick-deploying and retractable concrete barrier wall. The MBFS withstands forces up to a Category 5 hurricane and can be customized for any flood prevention application from 3 to 20 feet high. When not in use, the barrier is retracted into an underground concrete housing, ready to deploy remotely or manually in less than 3 minutes.

The two recent disasters, Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma devastated Texas, Florida and Georgia costing lives, displacing families and producing billions of dollars in infrastructure damage. With better planning and prevention systems, some of that damage may have been prevented. The RSA Movable Barrier Floodwall System(TM), mounted just behind the sea wall, would have prevented major flooding when raised but then becomes invisible when fully retracted. The MBFS has been designed using FEMA's hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, impact and wave action loads.

Unique patented features of the invention include a zero-leakage wet side/dry side plumbing discharge back into the flood zone. Concrete floodwalls and concrete foundations ensure stability under extreme conditions. The system is designed to last over 100 years with only minor annual maintenance. RSA provides all of the engineering framework, consulting and support necessary to build out the system on location.

When asked how financially strapped institutions - highlighted by FEMA's 2016 $25 billion deficit - can afford new flood solutions, Rick Adler, inventor, founder, President and CEO of RSA argued that it is far less expensive to prevent flooding disasters than remediate after them. Moreover, dollars alone cannot compensate for lost lives and family hardships.

Despite tremendous human cost and over $300 billion in flood related damages in the last three decades and now potentially $300 billion more, little investment has been spent on prevention. Mr. Adler says, "With so many locations at high risk for flooding, why do we wait until it happens and then spend billions of dollars to remediate instead of investing in long term preventive measures? And science tells us new areas are at risk of flooding each year."

The RSA Movable Barrier Floodwall System(TM) has been designed, engineered, analyzed and prototyped, and is ready for deployment across the country. Please see the brochure illustrating RSA Protective Technologies' innovative design.
