Report Reveals Top Five Immunoassay In Vitro Diagnostic Test Companies

ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Kalorama Information says that Roche, Abbott, Siemens Healthineers, Beckman Coulter and Alere lead the market for immunoassays. These five companies earn over 40% of the market, according to the report. The finding was made in Kalorama Information's report Immunoassay Markets.

"This market share cuts across a variety of disease categories, so it's important to remember that there might be companies that are leaders in an area of immunoassay but not reflected on our list," said Bruce Carlson, Publisher of Kalorama Information.

For the past few years, Roche Diagnostics has been very aggressive and has displaced Abbott as the immunoassay leader. Roche has excelled in infectious diseases and tests for women's health, sepsis, Vitamin D and a number of cancer markers.

Abbot secured the second market share position of the total market. Abbott Diagnostics has dominated the market for immunoassays since the 1980s. In 2016, 74% of Abbott's IVD sales were generated outside the U.S., but the company is slowly regaining ground in its home country through an effort to issue more and more FDA cleared immunoassays. Abbott's strength lies in a broad menu of tests and assay systems and successful capture of at least 50% of the world market for infectious diseases (the largest test segment), primarily hepatitis and HIV tests, outside the United States. Abbott Diagnostics has also added tests for Galectin-3 assay for use in conjunction with clinical evaluation as an aid in assessing the prognosis of patients diagnosed with chronic heart failure an HbA1c test.

Alere, Siemens Healthineers and Beckman Coulter also are top companies in the market. Siemens Healthineers' Immulite is a dedicated immunoanalyzer and even though Siemens has automated the analyzer, the company has focused on its chemiluminescence test menu on the line of ADVIA Centaur Immunoassay Systems, originally from Bayer Diagnostics. However, in July 2016, the FDA recalled the ADVIA Centaur XPT system due to defective results generated by system software. Beckman Coulter's Access and Synchron systems provide a wide menu that is continuously enhanced by new tests. Beckman Coulter's immunoassay menu consists of more than 60 tests for cancer detection, cardiac disease, thyroid function, reproductive endocrinology and women's health. Beckman Coulter continues to add novel and proprietary tests from different sources including tests for: inhibin A, High Mobility Group Box 1 (septic shock), erythropoetin, inhibin A, cPAPPA (marker of plaque instability), placental growth factor (PIGF), soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1(sFlt-1), soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L), preeclampsia, fertility hormones, CVD, autoimmune, inflammatory disease/ cytokines, and prenatal screening. Alere participates in nearly all immunoassay POC test segments but has a dominating position in rapid cardiac markers, drugs of abuse, infectious disease, pregnancy and fertility testing. The company is soon to be merged with Abbott, and when that is completed, it's likely the combined company will gain immunoassay market leadership.

More market share and specific percentages of market share are available in Kalorama's report. The report also details over 100 companies participating in the market.
