The growth of the global automotive cabin air filter market is directly proportional to the growth in the sales of vehicles. APAC is expected to contribute more to the market because of the high demand for automobiles. Governments worldwide are spreading awareness about the fatal effects of air pollution, which has resulted in the increased implementation of cabin air filters as an important component of the vehicle.

Introduction of washable cabin air filters

Cabin air filters are recommended to be replaced every 15,000 to 20,000 miles. This becomes very tedious; therefore, some vendors have introduced washable cabin air filters with multilayer filtration. These filters are extremely convenient and maintenance-free as they can be removed, cleaned and re-installed by the individual.

The multilayer filtration system helps to control odors, cleans and freshens the incoming air, and it is electrostatically charged to capture most mold, mildew, pollen, spores, fungi, and germs. Vendors such as K&N provide washable and reusable cabin air filters that have a life of 10 years/100,000 miles.

Rising demand for multilayer filtration systems

A multilayer filtration system has up to six layers, out of which one layer consists of activated carbon that helps in absorbing odor from vehicle exhaust emissions and external environment. All these layers have the capability of filtering more pollen and pollutants along with additional capabilities from the activated carbon layer. Dust particles smaller than 10µm can lead to serious respiratory diseases. But a vehicle equipped with multilayer filtration system can block particles less than 4µm, thereby providing a protective cover for the passengers.

“Vendors such as Bosch, Wix, and Volvo offer multilayer air filters that eliminate major pollutants and keep the passenger cabin fresh. These filters have in-built sensors that monitor the levels of toxicity outside the vehicle; if the toxicity levels are more than normal, they automatically shut down the vents. A majority of the world's urban population is suffering from respiratory diseases. This has spurred the need for these filters,” says Bandyopadhyay Ayan, a lead analyst at Technavio for automotive components research.

Rising demand for customizable filtration systems

These air filters contain a combination of two or more filters like HEPA+ULPA and are usually used in vehicles that operate in critical environments like nuclear sites, mines, military sites, chemical plants, etc. These environments contain highly toxic contents, and some places might even contain fatal radioactive particles. In these conditions, drivers need a cabin air filter that is custom made to block not just normal pollutants but also toxic fumes from chemicals or radiation.

“These filtration systems have in-built sensors that continuously monitor the air quality both inside and outside the vehicle. In the case of accidents where there is a chemical or radioactive substance leak, the sensors will shut down the vents to safeguard the driver. With increasing global AQI, custom made air filters may be required even in common passenger vehicles,” says Bandyopadhyay.
