Benzoic acid

Benzoic acid is used as a preservative in various food and cosmetics items. It occurs naturally and can also be synthetically produced. In laboratories, it can be produced from benzaldehyde, bromobenzene, benzyl alcohol, and benzyl chloride. Among these, the production of benzoic acid from benzaldehyde is the most common.

This product has various uses in medicines as well as in daily life. Benzoic acid is also used to convert precursors to plasticizers. Cinnamic acid is produced synthetically from benzaldehyde. A reaction of benzaldehyde and esters results in the formation of cinnamate esters. It is also produced by the condensation method, which involves benzaldehyde and malonic acid.

“Cinnamic acid is used in pharmaceuticals, flavors, and synthetic indigo. It is also used heavily in the manufacturing of methyl, ethyl, and benzyl esters. These products are further used in perfumes, deodorants, and other fragrance products. Cinnamic acid and its derivatives are used as antioxidants. This property is generally found in cinnamic derivatives that contain phenolic hydroxyl groups,” adds Kurva.

Benzyl alcohol

Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol. It is prepared synthetically by the hydrolysis of benzyl chloride, which is produced from benzaldehyde. When benzyl alcohol reacts with carboxylic acid, it forms esters.

There are various other uses of benzyl alcohol such as it is used as a bacteriostatic preservative in intravenous medications and cosmetics. Thus, multiple uses of benzyl alcohol increase its demand for the global benzaldehyde market, resulting in an increased demand for benzaldehyde.
