Breakthrough PostgreSQL 10 Delivers More Database Flexibility and Performance

BEDFORD, Mass., Oct. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- EnterpriseDB(® )(EDB(TM)), the database platform company for digital business, today applauds the achievement of the PostgreSQL Global Development Group for its newly released PostgreSQL 10. Administrators now have more flexibility as well as powerful new database features, including new parallel query and replication capabilities and performance improvements.

"Complex digital applications and analytic architectures require a more powerful and flexible database. As a major contributor to the Postgres core code base, EDB devoted countless developer hours to ensuring PostgreSQL 10 achieved new levels of performance and deployment flexibility," said Marc Linster, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Product Development, EnterpriseDB. "PostgreSQL 10 delivers features EDB customers require to build modern applications in the agile frameworks that many have adopted to remain competitive."

PostgreSQL 10, the most significant release in recent years, gives DBAs an array of new deployment choices. DBAs now have more flexibility when configuring PostgreSQL to meet the specific demands of their workloads and infrastructure. The new release of PostgreSQL also adds powerful new performance advances that return query results faster.

In addition to making major contributions to the open source PostgreSQL project, EDB is also a PostgreSQL packager and makes the database available to customers as part of the EDB Postgres(TM) Standard Edition. Customers making this selection use open source PostgreSQL but also get an integrated set of supported tools, developed by EDB using best-in-class technology, a powerful DBaaS management console, as well as a full menu of training and professional services offerings. Customers also get full access to the deep capabilities and resources of a Gartner recognized, enterprise-class vendor.

The new features in PostgreSQL that expand deployment options in PostgreSQL 10 include:

Logical Replication: With logical replication, DBAs have the ability to control replication by table or by database, in cases selectively replicating individual items and aggregating data spread across multiple servers for queries. This feature can also be used to easily create standbys for near-zero downtime upgrades.

Declarative Partitioning: This feature replaces and automates troublesome manual tasks that involved maintaining and updating triggers and rules for creating and managing table partitions. Bulk loading performance is also greatly improved compared to older, trigger-based solutions. Developers benefit as well. With partition controls now part of the database schema, they no longer must be written into the application.

Multi-column Statistics: DBAs can now specify additional statistics that should be gathered to improve query performance when what would otherwise be gathered by default would not have been sufficient to support creation of a high-quality query plan. Instead of using complex and fragile workarounds for poorly performing queries, DBAs can implement a robust fix with a single command.

ICU Collation Support: Previous releases of PostgreSQL automatically imported collations available from the host operating system. Now, PostgreSQL 10 adds the ability to use collations from the popular ICU library, allowing extensive customization of sorting behavior and cross-platform stability.

SCRAM Authentication: PostgreSQL 10 institutes enhanced security by implementing a Salted Challenge Response Authentication Mechanism (SCRAM) protocol for managing passwords. With SCRAM-SHA-256 in PostgreSQL 10, neither the information stored on the server nor what is exchanged during authentication is sufficient for unauthorized access.

The new features in PostgreSQL 10 that increase database performance include:

Improved Query Parallelism: Basic parallel query was introduced in PostgreSQL 9.6, giving way to expanded capabilities for implementation of greater functionality for real world use cases. The first of these new capabilities have come with PostgreSQL 10. New features include additional scans that control how the database executes and sorts parallel queries, and mechanisms for how it combines data to produce results. Parallel query has produced 2-4x performance increases for some workloads.

Expression Evaluation Engine: When running queries against large data sets, this enhancement now enables dramatically improved performance. This optimization applies modern programming techniques tailored to the latest generation of CPU hardware to expression evaluation.

Quorum Commit: This feature provides greater flexibility and performance for DBAs who require multiple synchronous replication standbys. With PostgreSQL, DBAs can specify different wait policies when designating standby servers to accept data for replication. Demand for synchronous replication across multiple databases and data centers has been growing. Greater flexibility will make it easier for companies to deploy PostgreSQL where synchronous replication is required. Financial services, for example, need to maintain consistent customer records across multiple data centers and geographies.
