Prince George's Community College Selects JCJ Architecture to Undertake Design for Marlboro Hall Expansion and Renovation

BOSTON, Oct. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- JCJ Architecture has been selected by Prince George's Community College to undertake the adaptive re-use and expansion of the school's main academic hub, Marlboro Hall. The project will involve a full renovation of the existing 130,000-square-foot building, first occupied in 1975, as well as the construction of a new, 100,000-square-foot addition.

Upon completion, Marlboro Hall will host a variety of learning and social spaces including classrooms, laboratories, offices, study rooms and tutoring centers.

"Prince George's Community College & JCJ Architecture's vision for Marlboro Hall includes space for both academic and social interaction," said Henry L. Dickson, Director of Planning, Design and Construction at Prince George's Community College. "JCJ Architecture's ideas on how to maintain the integrity of the existing structure while allowing for expansion proved they were the right partner to help us create a more engaging and dynamic space."

Peter Bachmann, AIA, Principal in Charge, will lead a seasoned interdisciplinary project team that includes Design Principal Lorenzo Mattii, AIA, and Project Manager Robert Hicks, AIA. The firm will also partner with KPN Architects of Baltimore, Maryland.

"When envisioning the new Marlboro Hall, we knew we had to challenge the 1970's paradigm that reinforced disassociated departments and practices. Our focus is on creating a space that will actively promote collaboration and amplify interdisciplinary learning," said Lorenzo Mattii, AIA, Design Principal.

One key feature of the proposed renovation is to create paths of travel within the building that unite new and existing areas to form an Urban Street, while also providing a gracious indoor space that will become the "living room" for the college.

Construction for the Marlboro Hall renovation and expansion is scheduled to begin in summer of 2019, with anticipated completion in fall of 2022.
