The growing environmental concerns compel vendors to reconsider their choice of material for packaging and cause businesses to reduce the use of materials that adversely impact the environment, thereby producing packaging with a higher percentage share of biodegradable materials.

“The environmental concerns encourage reuse by including attractive high-end boxes and bags as packaging components for their products. In 2016 Zappos, the online retailer, shipped shoes in new boxes that featured a collection of template designs printed on the inside, thereby encouraging consumers to reuse the box by converting it into a useful item, such as smartphone holder or a geometric planter. This trend of using innovative shoe boxes is expected to drive the shoe packaging market during the forecast period,” says Shakti Jakhar, a lead analyst at Technavio for packaging research.

Rising popularity of light weight packaging

Shoe companies are focusing on the use of less packaging for their products to reduce the requirement of packaging materials, thereby lowering the cost as well. Hence, packaging companies are focusing on innovating and finding ways to meet the requirement of the shoe companies. Designers are addressing this challenge by trying to design packages that require less material.

For example, a designer named Eunice Young Tak designed a package called OMNICLIP which won an A’ Design Award in 2013, one of the world’s best design competitions awarding the best designs and design concepts. OMNICLIP is a sustainable packaging design which addresses the sustainability issue by using less material. It cuts down the use of material by about 8% to 12% than the material used in normal shoe packaging.

Growing innovation in shoe packaging

Once its purpose of protecting shoes is complete, shoe boxes are discarded by the consumers and end up in landfills. Hence, companies are focusing on adopting innovative designs of shoe boxes fit for reuse by the consumers. For example, in 2015, Giro and Ralpha launched the Cross Shoe which is a cyclocross-specific shoe. The packaging of the shoe is made from a specially formed shell, with the shoe container shaped like a Styrofoam lunch box. The design allows the box to hold food and beverages.

“One of the most important factors of packaging is its eco-friendliness. It is observed that investing in more sustainable, eco-friendly packaging solutions can lower production costs and boost media coverage, while simultaneously improving the brand image,” says Shakti.

Increasing popularity of personalized packaging

Retail companies are striving to make each purchase feel personalized. Companies understand that consumers are spending their discretionary income. Hence, they want consumers to know that they really appreciate doing business with them by giving an out-of-box experience.

For example, Ralph Lauren, one of the global leaders in the design, marketing, and distribution of premium lifestyle products such as apparel, distributes its orders in a tough, pizza box-style shipper printed in navy blue on the inside panel, with the company logo. The product comes wrapped in a brown tissue paper, along with a thank-you card on top, and attached with a Ralph Lauren-branded navy sticker. Another such example is that of Kate Spade that similarly packages its orders as that of Ralph Lauren, using colorful tissue paper, a gold seal sticker, and a thank-you card. The trend of personalized packaging is expected to propel the shoe packaging market during the forecast period.
