Mobile analyzers

Mobile analyzers occupy a large market share due to their versatility and mobility. Mobile analyzers are either powered by mains or have an inbuilt battery pack for outdoor use. These analyzers usually consist of multiple analysis technologies for the identification of a variety of metals. Unlike handheld metal analyzers, mobile devices have both XRF as well as OES technologies.

According to Gaurav Mohindru, a lead unit operations research analyst from Technavio, “The growth in R&D, manufacturing quality control standards, and regulations on metal-based construction and maintenance globally is expected to be the biggest driver for this market segment during the next five years.”

Stationary analyzers

Stationary metal analyzers accounted for nearly 15% of the global metal analyzers market in 2016. Stationary metal analyzers are extremely accurate and can provide analysis for an extensive range of metals. These stationary analyzers can also be configured by the user for specific alloy testing and trace metal analysis.

“Stationary analysis equipment is generally used for process control in places such as foundries and metal refineries, where the testing is done at a particular stage of the production process. These also find extensive application in laboratories and R&D activities as they have high reproducibility during analysis and can quickly analyze most materials,” says Gaurav.

Handheld analyzers

Handheld analyzers have been gaining popularity since their introduction in the market and are expected to have the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Handheld analyzers are significantly smaller than the other two products and are much easier to use, which is the reason for their growing popularity in the market. Almost all handheld analyzers are based on XRF spectrometry technology as it can easily be miniaturized.

The design of handheld analyzers allows single-hand use easily in outdoor environments, remote areas, and onsite analysis. The improvement in battery technologies is enabling handheld analyzers to work longer without needing to be recharged. The recent introduction of LIBS technology in handheld analyzers allows the detection of heavy metals within a few seconds when compared with more than a minute required while using XRF technology for analysis.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s research analysts in this report are:

  • OLYMPUS
  • Oxford Instruments
  • Rigaku
  • SPECTRO Analytical Instruments
  • Thermo Fisher Scientific
