Why an Ounce of Healthcare Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

BROOKFIELD, Wis., Oct. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A new OnCourse Learning webinar series led by healthcare professionals highlights prevention strategies for some of healthcare's most troubling occurrences.

The three-part Prevention Series offers educational tips that healthcare professionals can incorporate into day-to-day care routines to protect patients and a facility's bottom line. The series will focus on an interprofessional approach to the following concerns:

    -- Falls
    -- Skin injuries
    -- Proper antimicrobial therapies

"Healthcare systems are aware of these topics and do try to prevent problems, but prevention can play a much bigger part in patient safety," said Maria Morales, MSN, RN, CPAN, director of CNE programs for OnCourse Learning. "The webinar series will help clinicians produce better outcomes, which can save money and protect their facilities from Medicare penalties."

The 1.0-hour webinars are available through two of OnCourse Learning's premier healthcare brands, Nurse.com and ContinuingEducation.com.

Falls

Medicare costs related to falls surpassed $31 billion in 2015, according to the national Centers for Disease Control.

Allison Lieberman, PT, MSPT, GCS, leads the recorded webinar "Inpatient Fall Prevention: The Balance Between Mobility and Safety," which is available for free through Oct. 30.

"Clinicians are regularly working with patients in a state of weakness who could be prone to falls," Morales said. "They might have come in strong, but now they are dealing with crutches or trying to get out of bed. Or, the patient could be an elderly person who came in confused."

Lieberman is the clinical manager of acute physical and occupational therapy at the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute in Edison, N.J.

The falls webinar is accredited for nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists and dietitians.

Antimicrobial therapies

Troy Kish, PharmD, will educate healthcare professionals about what proper antimicrobial therapy looks like in a recorded presentation titled "Antimicrobial Resistance." Kish is a clinical pharmacist in internal medicine at James J. Peters VA Medical Center in New York City and an assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Long Island University.

The CDC reported that 266.1 million courses of antibiotics were dispensed in 2014 from U.S. community pharmacies.

The webinar is accredited for professionals in nursing, pharmacy and medicine.

Skin injuries

Pamela Damron, MSN, RN, CWON, is featured in the webinar "It's Just a Stage 1 Pressure Injury. Or is it?" Damron has been a certified wound and ostomy nurse since 1998 and is a nursing instructor at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

According to the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2.5 million patients annually in the U.S. are impacted by skin injuries at a cost of $9.1 billion.

Along with normal repositioning and beds, the webinar discusses the role nutrition can play, along with other best practices.

The recorded webinar is accredited for nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists and dietitians/nutritionists.
