ORISE is Accepting Applications for the 2018 Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program for Graduate and Undergraduate Students

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is currently accepting applications for the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2018 Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program, which is a 10-week summer program for students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math.

The MLEF Program provides students with the opportunity to gain and develop research skills by training under the mentorship of program officials and scientists within DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy. This program is open to currently enrolled, full-time, degree-seeking students in a STEM program at an accredited college or university. Students must be at the bachelor’s (sophomore or higher), master’s or doctoral level with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. U.S. citizenship is required.

Participants will support Office of Fossil Energy mission-related research while gaining insight into how DOE is working to meet the energy challenges of the future. The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in the STEM fields, though all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.

The summer program may place students at one of several possible sites including:

  • Department of Energy Headquarters, Washington, D.C., and Germantown, Md.
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif.
  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, Calif.
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, N.M.
  • National Energy Technology Laboratory, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Morgantown, W.Va.; Albany, Ore.
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn.
  • Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, Wash.
  • Sandia National Laboratory, Livermore, Calif.
  • Strategic Petroleum Reserve, New Orleans, La.; and other SPR sites in Louisiana and Texas

The MLEF Program offers the following benefits:

  • Direct exposure to and participation in research on DOE mission-relevant research areas
  • Hands-on research experience and training under the mentorship of program officials and scientists
  • Stipends ranging from $600-$850 per week (depending on academic status) plus limited housing and travel reimbursement
  • Opportunities to present research at program-sponsored technical forum

MLEF Program applications are due by January 3, 2018. For application information and questions, contact MLEF@hq.doe.gov or visit http://orise.orau.gov/mlef.
