Battelle Wins Two R&D 100 Awards, Nets Special Recognition in Partnership with Ohio Soybean Council

Battelle won two of the recently announced R&D 100 Awards for its PipeAssess PITM software and coal-to-liquids process. In addition, Battelle was on a team with the Ohio Soybean Council, Kentucky State University and Redwood Innovations that won Special Recognition for a technology called EnzoMeal.

The national labs Battelle has a role in managing for the U.S. Department of Energy won a total of 23 awards, either individually or in collaboration with other labs and partners. The technologies include innovations such as more powerful magnets, better batteries, lighter vehicle materials and gunshot detection systems.

Since R&D Magazine started the awards 55 years ago, Battelle and its affiliated national labs have won a total of 380 R&D 100 Awards. Known as the “Oscars of Innovation” in the science and technology world, the annual awards recognize the most significant technologies the nation’s scientists and engineers create.

This year, the two Battelle winners address challenges that balance the world’s energy needs with environmental concerns.

PipeAssess PI is an innovative software application that uses physics-based, empirically derived modeling to estimate remaining pipeline life and predict axial crack growth under various operating scenarios. The user-friendly, customizable software is designed to help oil and gas pipeline companies meet critical industry requirements and reduce the risk of spills, which lead to financial loss, environmental issues and health concerns.

“As pipelines age, integrity management tools become increasingly important to ensure safety, particularly in high consequence areas,” said Bruce Young, Senior Research Scientist in the Infrastructure & Environment business unit. “Recognition by the industry is one of the greatest forms of endorsement this software can receive and provides justification for continued funding by industry and government.”

Battelle’s coal-to-liquids process uses breakthrough technology to dissolve coal in biomass-derived solvents to produce a synthetic crude at relatively low pressure without external hydrogen. Creating jet or other transportation fuels using this process significantly reduces cost and greenhouse gas emissions.
