Getting an online store setup is pretty easy these days; optimizing it however is not. It is not always apparent exactly where you should look or what exactly you need to focus on to fine-tune your operation for the best results. Successful online stores have learned, often from trial and error, what works to obtain more conversions. Wouldn't it be great if you could simply skip the errors? Today the NY based web design company, Lounge Lizard, shares their Top Tips for Optimizing E-Commerce Conversions.

1. Keep it simple. Your homepage should be simple and straightforward. If there are too many things to look at then you are distracting customers. Keep it simple so that people can quickly digest the page and get to shopping.

2. User friendly navigation. Site navigation has always been a key to a high conversion rate. People need to easily find navigation options and then be able to follow them to what they are looking for. Again, keep it simple and straightforward, following best practices that people are used to.

3. Remove Social Share buttons. While some sites benefit from social sharing, such as when people read a great article and want to share it, E-commerce is a platform that does not. In fact, social share buttons can be distracting to customers and can also get them thinking about those platforms rather than completing a conversion.

4. Offer free shipping. Thanks to Amazon this is almost a must requirement for online sales unless you are lucky enough to have a stranglehold on a popular niche product. With other retailers like Target and Walmart offering free shipping to stores you simply must be competitive and that means offering free shipping as well, even if that free options takes a handful of days.

5. Utilize high quality product images. People need to be able to see what they want to buy. By using high quality images, zoom options and multiple angles you will increase conversions as people can obtain a better feel for the object they are going to purchase.

6. Use live chat. Live chat options add a level of safety and helpfulness to a site that increases conversions. If people have questions during the sale process they want an immediate answer and offering one-click help solves that problem.

7. Provide a phone number. In addition to live chat, having a contact phone number also adds to the helpfulness of your site as well as increasing trust.

8. Use Testimonials. Testimonials are one of the best ways to increase consumer confidence and sales conversions. They utilize social proof which can often help a person make a decision about a purchase rather than waiting and purchasing from someone else later. Video testimonials are the highest converting option as they are deemed more authentic however text testimonials are also effective.

9. Include product ratings. These are similar to testimonials as they offer social proof but at a brief glance.

10. Use A/B testing for pricing pages. The pricing pages are critical to closing the deal and as such they should be tested carefully to ensure they are operating at the highest rate. Using A/B testing helps you compare a multitude of options in a test environment that can then be applied live once you understand what truly motivates your target demographic to convert.

11. Use bigger buttons. Larger buttons increase conversions because they are easy to see, understand, and use.

12. Turn off Captcha. Captcha is the program box that requires you correctly re-type a word to confirm that you are a human and not a bot. While this can be useful in certain areas, for E-commerce it is not. A customer already have to enter enough information including shipping and payment, why give them one more hurdle that is unnecessary for this platform?

13. Allow Guest checkout. Requiring people to create an account or sign-in will always reduce conversions. Some people like to remain anonymous on the internet while others might simply be in a hurry.

14. Add PayPal. Visa, MasterCard, American Express and the other major carriers should all be part of your payment options as should PayPal. After all, there are more than 218 million active accounts worldwide with them.

15. Boost page speed. Just a 1 second delay in your load speed compared to the competition can cost you an estimated 7% in conversions. People do not like to wait for pages to load and transactions to take place so check your page speed and if necessary make adjustments to boost it.
