E-J Electric T&D LLC Rebuilds and Enhances Reliability of the Milford 115kV Transmission Line
WALLINGFORD, Conn., Dec. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- E-J Electric T&D LLC (E-J Electric) completed an electric project on the Milford Transmission Line between the Milvon Substation to the Devon Tie Switching Substation rebuilding and updating existing electric equipment. The E-J Electric team rebuilt two 115kV circuits on independent steel monopole lines, parallel to the north and south side of the Metro-North Railroad (MNR). E-J also facilitated the upgrade of both the Milvon and Devon substations.
Energizing the Transmission Line (Out with the old, in with the new)
E-J Electric removed the existing United Illuminating Company (UI) conductors, shield wire and bonnets from the MNR lattice structures. E-J then installed 43 new steel monopole Structures on drilled pier foundations. 2.2 circuit miles of new 1272 ACSR conductor and 2.2 miles of new Optical Ground Wire (OPGW). In addition to the transmission line rebuild, E-J also reconfigured and upgraded both the Milvon and Devon substations.
Overcoming Electrical Challenges
The E-J Electric's team faced significant challenges, including the coordination of line outages with Metro North Railroad (MNR) and UI, the stringing of over a mile of continuous conductor that crossed Interstate I-95 and abiding by the strict time frame permitted by CDOT to install the new pole line. E-J Electric's ability to successfully work in conjunction with the MNR, balance the manpower and high equipment demands and coordinate work efforts surrounding the ever-changing outage requirements permitted the team to overcome all the problems they were presented with.
