CITGO Lemont Recognizes National STEM Day with First Annual Celebration

LEMONT, Ill., Dec. 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- CITGO Lemont Refinery celebrated National STEM Day on Nov. 8 with more than 360 students, teachers and parents from Homer Glenn, Lemont, Lockport and Romeoville participating in 29 hands-on STEM activities and live demonstrations. The event is part of the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline, a program that seeks to increase access to educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The event also recognized College and Career Applications teacher Jeff Brown, from Lockport High School, as STEM Teacher of the Year. Nominated by his students and peers, Brown was awarded a $250 school supply gift certificate along with the opportunity to sail on the Ocean Exploration Trust vessel, the E/V Nautilus, as a CITGO Nautilus Ambassador on a voyage in 2018.

"National STEM Day is another opportunity for us to promote the importance of STEM education by equipping educators with teaching resources, and encouraging students to pursue STEM related careers," said Jim Cristman, Vice President and General Manager of the CITGO Lemont Refinery.

The CITGO Lemont Refinery is actively involved in STEM education, awarding STEM scholarships and partnering with educational partners like The Conservation Foundation and Project Infinite Green. During the academic year, TeamCITGO volunteers regularly give classroom presentations, serve as judges for Science Fairs and participate in Robotics Clubs.

CITGO launched the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline program in 2016. This initiative partners with educational organizations near the company's operational areas to increase access to educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math. The program promotes the importance of STEM education in the socioeconomic development of our communities and highlights the numerous pathways to rewarding careers, including those in the energy industry. Since its inception, it has benefited more than 17,000 students and educators throughout areas of the country where CITGO has operations.
