CollegeVine Expands Pro Bono Program through Pilot Collaboration with Public High Schools

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- CollegeVine, a national online provider of student mentoring and college admissions guidance for high schoolers and their families, announced today the expansion of its pro bono program in partnership with Jefferson Dollars for Scholars for Jefferson Parish Public School students attending Haynes Academy, Patrick Taylor Science & Technology, and Thomas Jefferson High School in Jefferson County Louisiana, offering one-on-one near peer mentorship and college admissions advising to select high school students.

"Even during our founding days when we were working out of our dorm rooms, we always thought it was important to work with students who didn't have the financial means to use a college advisor," said Johan Zhang, co-founder and head of marketing, CollegeVine. "We believe that access to quality guidance should be a basic right for all students in this country. We're excited to take the next step in recognizing that vision."

Through the pilot program, Jefferson Parish Public School seniors will work directly with CollegeVine mentors who have recently navigated the admissions process firsthand, representing more than 20 different majors and diverse backgrounds. By leveraging the myCollegeVine technology platform, mentors work with students to complete the college application process from beginning to end, including creating a school list, crafting college essays, and comparing options when college offers are made.

"CollegeVine has been such a help through my college application process. As a first generation applicant, I had no idea what I was getting myself into," said Jefferson Parish Public School senior, Kennedy Andarae. "Luckily my advisor has helped me through each step with such patience and kindness."

"We're on a mission to level the college admissions playing field for families of all socioeconomic backgrounds and we're happy to expand our momentum with Jefferson Parish Public School," said Zack Perkins, co-founder and business development lead, CollegeVine. "Helping students whose families do not have the means to use a college advisor or other guidance services is at the core of who we are."

In addition to its pilot program with high schools, CollegeVine recently announced the fifth iteration of its CollegeVine Pro Bono Scholarship, which aims to provide its college admissions guidance services to individual ambitious students who, due to one circumstance or another, might not have access to expert admissions counseling. In past years the program has helped students gain acceptance and scholarships to colleges such as Harvard, Princeton, Caltech, and more.
