AEP and Xcel Energy Tap Tendril to Dramatically Reduce Demand and Increase Energy Efficiency

Tendril today announced the results of its Orchestrated Energy Summer 2017 roll-outs. Announced in November 2016 after being tested with select utilities, Orchestrated Energy calculates a home’s thermal mass, predicts consumer behavior and integrates with connected devices, to create a unique dispatch schedule for every home, every day. The roll-outs ran across 15 states in 3 of the top United States investor-owned utilities, including Indiana Michigan Power and Xcel Energy, with support for ecobee smart thermostats. On days when Orchestrated Energy was in control of the thermostat, these utilities reduced HVAC load by an average of 85% during the DR window, and delivered an additional 14% of HVAC energy efficiency savings on top of the 10% savings already provided by smart thermostats. Additionally, customer comfort increased as evidenced by a 33% decrease in the number of times a customer adjusted their thermostat.

Orchestrated Energy offered as part of Tendril Platform 4 is the only data analytics software solution to provide detailed insight into home characteristics, weather patterns and consumer behaviors. In addition to reducing peak HVAC load and improving the energy efficiency of smart thermostats, Orchestrated Energy is unique in its ability to help utilities provide value within the connected home and establish Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), an important technology in managing the integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).

ecobee participated in the summer 2017 roll-outs of Orchestrated Energy with their ecobee3 smart thermostat. “We were pleased to partner with Tendril and support our utility partners with the implementation of the Orchestrated Energy solution,” said Chris Carradine, Executive Vice President, ecobee. “We applaud Tendril and the forward-thinking utilities that participated in these roll-outs for recognizing that ecobee smart thermostats provide comfort and savings to customers while reducing peak demand and improving energy efficiency.”

Additional smart thermostat partnerships have been formed with Nest and Honeywell.

“These results are the culmination of years of groundbreaking work and lay a solid foundation for a future where utilities are taking innovative approaches to solving complex demand-side challenges,” said Adrian Tuck, CEO, Tendril. “With Orchestrated Energy we are ensuring customers stay engaged, satisfied and comfortable during demand management events, while building a foundation for supporting non-wires alternatives and enabling the creation of Virtual Power Plants, an important element to securing our energy future.”

Orchestrated Energy won the prestigious Gold Edison Award in 2017, was named a Greentech Media GridEdge Award winner and was nominated as a finalist for the 2017 Platt’s Global Energy Award. For more information on Tendril Orchestrated Energy, visit here.
