Repeat-Use Products Drive Growth in Global Bulk Packaging Market

Advances will be somewhat faster than those seen in the previous 10 years, despite decelerating growth in the Asia/Pacific, the largest regional market. Gains in the Asia/Pacific will still be above the global pace, despite a slowdown in the large Chinese market. The more mature North American and West European markets will both see improved growth, due to renewed manufacturing output. Changes in the product mix generally favor packaging suitable for repeated uses, although single-use products such as shipping sacks and fibre drums retain a significant presence in many applications.

In many segments of the packaging industry where they compete, flexible packaging is taking share from rigid products. This is generally not the case for bulk packaging. However, the product mix is by no means static. In nondurable goods applications, larger, more durable containers -such as flexible and rigid intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs/RIBCs)- are expected to see above average growth. Plastic drums continue to expand their share of overall demand, outpacing steel and fibre types. The product mix will increasingly favor products that offer performance advantages such as ease of filling and emptying, as well as greater compatibility with automated packaging processes.

Sustainability Remains Key, with Increased Importance in Developing Markets

While performance and cost remain the top priorities for bulk packaging, sustainability considerations have moved up the list. This is increasingly true in developing countries where upfront costs have traditionally been paramount. In more affluent markets, sustainability has been a priority for some time already. Manufacturers and consumers are more cognizant of packaging materials, and their potential environmental impact. Companies are also keenly aware that packaging choices reflect on their products and themselves.

Most bulk packaging products are able to make at least some sustainability claim. Bulk boxes can be made from recycled fiber, and are readily recyclable themselves. RIBCs can be reused for years, reducing raw materials that would otherwise be used to produce many single-use products. In the end, careful life-cycle assessments are needed to make informed product selections.
