VHS Learning Offers New College Essay Writing Summer Course

BOSTON, May 5, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- High school students preparing to apply to college can give themselves a leg up with VHS Learning's newest summer course offering, Writing the College Application Essay. This four-week course will focus on best practices in essay writing and will run from June 17 to July 17, 2020 and then again from July 20 to August 14, 2020.

"The college essay allows students to present their personal story and potential in a way that grades and test scores alone cannot," said Carol Ribeiro, President & CEO of VHS. "Several high schools have this important college essay assignment built into their grade 11 English spring curriculum, but with unexpected changes to spring curriculums around the world, many juniors may no longer have this assignment. One way that VHS Learning can help during these uncertain times is with the addition of this new college essay summer course to our already robust online summer school catalog of offerings."

The new four-week Writing the College Application Essay course will take students through the writing process in depth - from brainstorming, to outlining, to drafting, and finally to revising - and create a final, polished, 500-word personal essay that can be used for college, scholarship, or job applications. The course will help students answer two essential questions:

-- What story from my life experience captures some of my most important
        values and accomplishments?
-- What is the best process - and what are the best tools - for creating a
        polished, engaging personal essay?

During the course, students will also work on shorter essays common to many college applications. They will not only produce a strong personal essay (and supplemental essay) for practical use in their college application process, but will also learn a methodical, standards-based approach to writing that will serve them in college and for the rest of their lives.

"Writing the College Application Essay is a low-cost alternative for rising seniors preparing for college. Not all families have the means to pay for a college consultant or tutor to help with the college application process," Ribeiro said. "This new course will help students present their best selves through their unique personal story and their ability to put together a well-written application essay."
