American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Announces Pierre M. Désy, MPH, CAE, as New Chief Executive Officer

CHICAGO, May 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) is pleased to announce the selection of its new Chief Executive Officer, Pierre M. Désy, MPH, CAE. Désy will begin serving in the role on July 23, 2025.

Désy recently served as CEO of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) and the Foundation for Women's Cancer (FWC), where he led the development and implementation of strategic plans, revised bylaws, improved governance models, and advanced diversity and inclusion initiatives. Under his leadership, the organizations saw increased non-dues revenue, more engaged and growing membership bases, and significantly higher attendance at meetings and conferences. He also oversaw substantial growth in investments and the Women's Cancer Fund and led efforts to diversify educational programs and conference offerings to better serve evolving member needs. In addition, Désy has held executive leadership roles with the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) and the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). He has also served as a management consultant and coach, supporting healthcare associations and professionals in improving performance and achieving excellence.

"I am honored to join the AAHPM team and to collaborate with its board, committees, members, and organizational partners as we continue our work to innovate and advance the field of hospice and palliative care," said Désy. "I am particularly energized to be part of an organization where I can bring together my public health background and decades of association management experience, and work alongside a team that shares my passion for building partnerships, advancing health equity, and supporting interdisciplinary collaboration to expand access to quality care. I am impressed by the work that has been accomplished by the Academy and look forward to working together to further its mission."

Desy's passion for leading organizations that are committed to providing high-quality and equitable care made him a strong candidate for this position. His diversified experience was integral in the selection as well. Désy will be supported by AAHPM's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kristina Newport; and newly appointed Chief Experience Officer, Emily Muse; and Senior Director of Governance and Operations, Yumeka Brown.

"Pierre Désy brings a unique convergence of expertise as a healthcare association executive and a public health professional who has worked closely with teams of physicians and members of the interdisciplinary care team throughout his career," notes Arif Kamal, MD, MBA, MHS, AAHPM Board President and Chief Patient Office at the American Cancer Society (ACS). "His entrepreneurial spirit, authentic leadership style, and visionary approach have been instrumental in driving growth and innovation within the associations and non-profit sector for more than 25 years."
