UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE BUCARAMANGA - UNAB, is a private higher education institution that offers high quality undergraduate and postgraduate programs in different fields. UNAB is a non-profit organization located in Bucaramanga whose purpose is the creation of professionals geared toward the improvement of the region and the country.

Mission: The University has as a mission the creation of professionals in different fields and the sustainable development of the region through research activities and inspired by democratic ideas and academic freedom.

Vision: UNAB has as a vision to be established as an important University in the Colombian region, and be recognized for its excellence and quality in education. Its technical and technological programs will play an essential part in the development of the institution and the region as well.

History

UNAB initiated its activities with the administrative and legal sciences programs, and it was in 1974 when the next three undergraduate programs, Business Administration, Law and Public Accounting, were established. By the end of the seventies and in the early eighties, with advances made in the fields of humanities and education, the Children's Education program, whose purpose is to strengthen pedagogical awareness, was established. These humanistic studies were complemented with the Social Communication program and the majors in Journalism and Organizational Communication.

In the nineties, the information science boom led to the establishment of the Systems Engineering Program. After that, the University decided to offer two innovative programs: Market Engineering and Financial Engineering. At the same time, the Tourism and Hotel Administration program was established.

By the end of the decade, the world and national debate on energy resources and their impact on the economy led the University to establish the Power Engineering program. This is how UNAB expressed its social commitment to the country and its concerns towards environmental sustainability. In a similar context, the University took on the challenge of creating the Mechatronic Engineering program, breaking new ground in Colombia and playing its part in the improvement of the competitiveness of the productive sector in the country.

Besides the development of conventional undergraduate programs in the nineties, the University began designing a virtual education model, with the support of specialists in Education, Communications and Information Technology. It was then when the Virtual UNAB department was established.

During the latest years, the Virtual Educational System of UNAB was strengthened with the creation of Virtual programs in Public Accounting, Business Administration and Literature. During the same period, the Audiovisual Production program was established.

In late March 2003, the academic technological division of UNAB was created, which centralizes in training and consultancy projects in information technologies and communications.
