Universitas Gadjah Mada, (internationally known as Gadjah Mada University, abbreviated as UGM) is an Indonesian public ivy league research university located in Yogyakarta, founded on December 19, 1949. UGM is the oldest and largest institution of higher learning in Indonesia. The 360 acre university comprises of 18 faculties, 68 undergraduate study programs, 23 diploma study programs, 104 master and spesialist study programs, and 43 Doctorate study programs.

It has approximately 55,000 students, 1,187 foreign students and 2,500 faculty members currently. Universitas Gadjah Mada is considered to be one of the most prestigious universities in Indonesia.

UGM is implementing an educopolis area, a step taken by universities in creating conducive environment for the continuity of the learning process. These efforts are pursued in the context of developing multidisciplinary collaborations and responding to ecological issues in order to achieve the vision of the university. Some of the steps are reducing pollution and vehicle exhaust emissions, development of pedestrian, restriction of vehicles entering the campus, construction of new dormitories on the campus, development of parking pockets, planting trees and many more.

The Special Region of Yogyakarta of where UGM is located, is one of the smallest provinces in Indonesia and has been widely known as a center of Javanese culture as well as a center of learning. It has 3,400,000 inhabitants, 511,000 of whom reside in the city of Yogyakarta. Its designation as a center of learning is marked by the existence of 120 state and private tertiary educational institutions, with a student population of over 300,000.

Universtitas Gadjah Mada has amongst others conducted research in the following domains: electronic nose, robotic systems, UAV, and Nano Satellites. The Faculty of Engineering Gadjah Mada University has grown as the largest faculty in Gadjah Mada University, both in trems of the number of students and faculty staff. Having that attribute, Faculty of Engineering Gadjah Mada University, has been challenged to be directly involved in transforming and developing sciences in engineering, especially to serve for enhancing the the prosperity of our nation, and human being general. In order to perform its substantial role, all unit within the faculty has been continuously improving their quality of services, including two departments, i.e. Chemical Engineering and Civil Environmental Engineering which have obtained ISO 9001:2000, and Laboratory of Natural Oil, Gas and Coal Technology, which has acquired ISO 17025:2005 since 2008. In addition, almost all undergraduate and postgraduate study programs have renewed and improved their national accreditation conducted by BAN-PT (National Accreditation Board for Higher Education).

Becoming a competent higher education institution which produces Diploma, Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral degree graduates that are professional, having high integrity, cultural sense, international qualifications, national awareness, and having capability in giving maximum contributions to science and technology for Indonesia and global society.

In accordance with UGM's vision an as World Class Research University, Faculty of Engineering has conducted a number of activities and programs to improve the international recognitions, through the development of various academic collaboration, including double-degree programs, collaborative research programs, with much-admired universities in United States, Europe, as well as Asian region. Asian University Network (AUN) Seed-Net, is one of the networks, for which Department of Geological Engineering has been the Host Institution, and some other departments have been the Member Institution, is really a supportive forum for bringing Faculty of Engineering to become more internationally recognized.
