at high costs: the sheer data volume of video
streams requires expensive and complex video
transmission networks to get the video stream
to the command and control centre. Therefore,
many remote locations, like tunnels, bridges,
train crossings and remote city areas are
currently often excluded from video surveillance.
TETRA - TErrestrial Trunked RAdio
TETRA is the open standard for a new generation
of digital land mobile radio communications.
It is designed to meet the needs of the highly
demanding professional mobile radio networks
(PMR) as used by Public Safety organisations,
Utilities, Transport, Military, Railways,
and others. In cooperation with FREQUENTIS,
TETRA systems have been installed in a lot
of countries around the world like e.g. Russia,
China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea,
Saudi Arabia, Israel, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela
TETRA is the only existing digital PMR-standard
defined by the European
Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
Therefore, high product availability and excellent
interoperability (IOP) are guaranteed. The
European Community agreed on the common use
of TETRA in the context of the Schengen Treaty.
Almost 100 organisations, including FREQUENTIS,
from all continents are represented in the
TETRA Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Association,
which works on standards and publishes relevant
The main applications are voice and extensive
data communication services. Networks based
on the TETRA-standard provide cost-effective
and secure communications with advanced capabilities
for mobile and stationary users in companies
and organisations. It features fast call set-up,
high data rates, group calls and direct mode.
As a standard, TETRA should be regarded as
complementary to GSM and DECT. In comparison
with GSM, TETRA is more fail-safe, implements
a higher security level and allows excellent
network coverage. In contrary to the older
Tetrapol systems TETRA provides features like
full-duplex calls and roaming in addition
to a spectrum-efficiency that is twice as
high as that of Tetrapol.
