The Maasbracht-based company Surface Treatment does exactly as its name suggests.
It treats surfaces; more precisely, it develops and applies coatings to products made of aluminum or aluminum alloys. The coatings are applied to combat wear and corrosion and to provide heat-resistance and insulating capacity.
The company's developmental role involves a major R&D component and the technical sophistication of the field demands a range of quality certifications.
With 85 per cent exports, its principal markets are in the aerospace, automotive and electronics industries and it clocks up a healthy 7 million Euros gross profit annually. |

Surface Treatment does not believe in the velvet glove of the publicity agent, but prefers a hands-on approach to the job.
 The man-of-action approach is vital, but R&D capacity and quality have to be evidenced too.
Ten per cent of the company's 70-man staff are involved in research and development, working together with their clients to solve problems and develop new applications. Self-lubricating Teflon applied to ceramics by electrolysis, for example.
Surface Treatment has all the certification a customer could wish for. The Airworthiness Approval JAA, ISO 9001, AQAP 110 and NADCAP.
The list of Surface Treatment 's clients includes Airbus, Boeing, British Aerospace, Bombardier, Lockheed Martin, MacDonnell Douglas, German Railways, Mercedes Benz, Ministries of Defense - virtually everyone requiring capital-intensive value - added work of this sort.
For security reasons, the plant is off limits to visitors, but some major projects are sufficiently well-known to bear exposure. These include the provision of heat-resistant shields to the European Space Agency's Ariane rocket, piston cylinders for a range of major railroads, work on Mercedes Benz ABS systems and a radiation shield for Xerox Copiers. Work on BMW's aluminum car and a role in the Channel tunnel also give some idea of the range of the company's activities. |
