The institute for mechanical engineering and industrial management (INEGI), is a leading Portuguese University - Industry interface RTO (research and technology organization). It was founded in 1986 as a non-profit private association by a combination of public and private actors: the University of Porto, the Portuguese Mechanical and Metallurgical Industries Association and the Portuguese Association for Management and Industrial Engineering. The link to academia is kept until today as many of the faculty of the department of mechanical engineering and industrial management of the University of Porto (DEMEGI - FEUP) collaborate in INEGI's scientific and consultancy activities.

In its 20 years of existence INEGI has developed and consolidated a status of privileged industry partner, through consultancy, development and continued participation in collaborative projects. In fact R&D services to private and public companies account for more than 55% of the Institute's turnover of over 4 million euros. INEGI's ability to develop industry solutions is anchored in a large range of competences in the fields of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management and, whenever needed, the integration of external competences, in a complementary logic, through the establishment of partnerships with other R&D Institutions.

INEGI's workforce exceeds 110 full-time employees, from which around 65% are under permanent contract and the rest are research scholarship holders. INEGI's workforce is complemented with more than 60 DEMEGI researchers. Notably, a significant part of these complement carry out their main research activities in INEGI: in a typical year INEGI's researchers publish over 300 publications (journal and conferences).

INEGI incorporates two FCT research units (FCT: Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation) on "Experimental Mechanics and novel materials" and "New technologies and Advanced Processes" as well as one Platform Grant (Associated Laboratory) in ENERGY, TRANSPORT and AERONAUTICS: LAETA.

INEGI is under final Certification by ISO 9001:2000, the Quality Management System. The Laboratories of Reaction to Smoke and Fire and Environmental Characterisation are accredited by IPAC under NP EN ISO/IEC 7025:2005.

INEGI is an associate member in DANOTEC; EARTO; MANUFUTURE and C3P. INEGI is also a candidate to GRA-Clean Sky Aeronautics & Air Transport JTI and.
