Third Round of 2017 Hackaday Prize Spotlights Projects That Move
PASADENA, Calif., June 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Hackaday, a popular website read by engineers, makers, and inventors that celebrates hardware hacks, launches the Wheels, Wings and Walkers round of the 2017 Hackaday Prize global engineering initiative.
Hackaday challenges participants to build something that moves with the goal to improve humanity. Potential project ideas include wheelchairs, environmental drones, or bicycles for people of all different shapes and sizes. The round continues through July 24.
Participants can work alone or collaborate as a team. Twenty projects are selected from the Wheels, Wings and Walkers round -- one of six rounds -- and awarded $1,000 per project.
The other rounds are Design Your Concept (Mar. 20-May 1), Internet of Useful Things (May 1-today), Assistive Technologies (July 24-Sept. 4), Anything Goes (Sept. 4-Oct. 16), and an ongoing Best Product round. At the end of six rounds, 120 projects will advance to the finals, where six top prizes will be awarded. $250,000 in prizes are awarded to the most innovative and impactful open source projects over the course of the six technical challenges.
Past grand prize winners have included an invention allowing ALS patients to control a wheelchair with their eyes called the Eyedrivomatic and the Dtto explorer modular robot.
But making the world a better place doesn't end with a grand prize for a single build. "Just by talking about your ideas and sharing your excitement you become the inspiration for this and every successive generation of problem solvers," says Mike Szczys, Hackaday's editor in chief.
