Growing popularity of biosensors and sensor fusion technologies

Increasing road fatalities during the night hours are being prioritized by governments. As per a 2015 report from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the fatality rate stood three times higher in the night (6 PM to 5:59 AM). Due to this, many governments are focusing on curbing night time road fatalities. In this case, the combination of sensor technologies that include multiple biosensors such as alcohol-odor detection sensors and eye alertness tracking sensors through image sensing technologies with light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensing technologies, which have proven results for guiding vehicles even if in a fully autonomous mode through extremely dark conditions, can prove to be extremely beneficial for addressing this.

Advances in calibration

Sensor calibration of fixed gas detectors needs to be performed in the field where the environment is less friendly, and there are high chances of safety and performance being compromised. Accurate calibration is an important factor for safety requirement, as non-accurate calibration might lead to false alarms and even shut down of the process.

According to Sunil Kumar Singh, a lead sensors research analyst at Technavio, “Vendors in the chemical sensors market are working on next-generation universal gas detectors, which can be calibrated in the lab that has a safe environment for establishing gas sensor parameters. This innovation will reduce the risk of accuracy and help in the adoption of fixed gas detectors.”

Introduction of nano gas sensors

In May 2017, AerNos, an innovator in nano gas sensors, announced that it has developed a small, accurate, and affordable nano gas sensor configured to detect multiple harmful or toxic gases to the parts per billion and designed specifically to integrate with the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which play a major role in smart city initiatives. Smart cities rely on IoT to deploy a network of sensors used to collect, analyze, and provide insights to enhance the quality of life, drive an innovative economy, and create a healthier and more sustainable environment.

“There are many smart city projects across various cities globally, which include Copenhagen, Denmark; London, England; Seoul, South Korea; Helsinki, Finland; and Barcelona, Spain where many sensors are used to capture data every second. Owing to the growth in artificial intelligence, many businesses and citizens can receive real-time insights and trends, which can be customized on the basis of users need,” adds Sunil.
