The production of labels is estimated to increase steadily during the forecast period. The increase in labels production is primarily because of the increasing demand for technologically advanced labels, as well as new varieties, shapes, designs, and sizes of the manufactured labels. Many vendors across the world are establishing manufacturing plants in emerging markets because the production costs in these markets are low, which makes the efficiency of the manufacturers high.

The top three revenue-generating label type segments of the global labels market are discussed below:

Pressure-sensitive labels

Pressure-sensitive labels are self-adhesive and compatible with most types of container shapes, materials, and product type. Pressure-sensitive labels are popularly used in beverage and wine products because these labels do not react with water when stored in ice-buckets, refrigerators, ice, and coolers. Pressure-sensitive labels do not react with water because of their water-resistant surfaces.

According to Sharan Raj, a lead tags and labels research analyst from Technavio, “Pressure-sensitive labels were widely used in Europe and North America because of high demand from the food and beverages industry. North America accounted for more than 50% of the market share in 2015. On the other hand, Europe accounts for 40%-45% of the global wine and spirits market. The region also accounted for around 60% of the total global consumption of wine and spirits with more than 65% global exports in the global labels market in 2015.”

Glue-applied labels

Glue-applied labels do not have adhesive layers, and they must be glued during the application process. A hot glue or cold glue adhesive is used to apply the label. As a result, glue-applied labels are comparatively less expensive as compared with other types of labels. The glue-applied labels market produced more than 14 billion square meters of labels in 2015 and witnessed an increase of around 10% in 2016.

“Glue-applied labels do not have complex press requirements and are ideal for long print runs. However, they are being significantly replaced by pressure-sensitive labels as their application is more functional in industries, such as food and beverages. Another major reason for the limited growth of the glue-applied label market in North America is the increase in popularity of plastic labels over paper labels,” adds Sharan.

Sleeve labels

Heat shrink labels are a type of sleeve labels and accounted for the largest share of the market of more than 85% in 2015. Heat shrink sleeve labels have extreme shrinkage properties that help them suit the shapes of all types of products. These labels are made from polymer film substrates, are inexpensive, and provide high-quality graphics. These features have increased the demand for sleeve labels in the market, thereby raising the demand for labels.

Another factor for the increase in demand for labels is the growth of major industries, including food and beverages, healthcare, personal care goods, and consumer goods. The global sales demand for cosmetics rose to around USD 10 billion in 2016 and is estimated to increase further, thereby increasing the demand for labels in the cosmetics sector.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s research analysts in this report are:

  • Avery Dennison
  • Bemis
  • CCL Industries
  • LINTEC
