The global automotive refurbished turbochargers market in the passenger cars segment accounted for the largest market share in terms of revenue. In the segment, most of the vehicles equipped with direct injection technology are also equipped with turbochargers. There has been an increasing trend where OEMs are shifting from port injection technology to direct injecting technology in gasoline engines, whereas, most of the modern diesel engines are already equipped with direct injection technology with turbochargers. As a result, automotive refurbished turbochargers in the gasoline engines segment will grow at a faster rate as compared to diesel engines during the forecast period.

Increased adoption of electric turbochargers

An electric turbo system boosts efficiency by 15%-20%. Electric turbocharger comprises a high-speed electric air compressor and a high-speed turbine-generator. Both these components ensure high electrical efficiency and minimal loss of energy during transfer.

“The advanced form of electric turbocharger technology is a perfect solution for engine downsizing and improved engine efficiency for gasoline/diesel engine. It can produce higher levels of boost, thus, enabling engine downsizing to reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel economy without any loss of performance or drivability. It also helps in reducing the turbo lag as within a fraction of seconds it reaches full boost,” says Siddharth Jaiswal, a lead analyst at Technavio for research on automotive electronics.

Growing adoption of variable geometry turbochargers (VGTs)

VGTs are a family of turbochargers, which are generally designed to allow an effective aspect ratio of the turbo to be altered based on the change in conditions. VGT allows the altering of these ratios such that the turbo is maintained at its optimum levels at all engine speeds.

“VGTs are very common in the diesel-powered automotive engines since diesel has lower exhaust temperatures, which means the turbocharger system is less prone to failures. This will impact the market opportunity for refurbished turbochargers in the near future when the usage of VGTs has accrued in the automotive industry. Gasoline burns at very high temperatures, which limits the use of VGTs in gasoline-powered engines, as high temperatures may damage the turbocharger components,” adds Siddharth.

Equipping compact car segment with GDI system in conjunction with turbochargers

The main utility of direct fuel injection in conjunction with a turbocharger is to reduce the amount of fuel intake and at the same time increase the power output. This is achieved by the faster mixing of air and fuel in the cylinder, which allows for higher compression ratios, mitigating knock, and resulting in the higher output of power. The amount of fuel used is measured precisely for enabling more low-end torque and fuel efficiency.

Usage of turbochargers along with direct injection has reduced the engine size and enabled OEMs to integrate them within compact cars having up to 1500 cc capacity. Turbocharged engines with direct injection are seen to surpass the reliability and power output of naturally aspirated engines in their own segment.
