2020 Mom & the Perinatal Mental Health Society Announce the Winners of the 2017 Maternal Mental Health Innovation Awards

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- 2020 Mom and the Perinatal Mental Health Society (PNMHS), with the generous support of Denver's Zoma Foundation, proudly announce the three winners of the inaugural National Maternal Mental Health Innovation Awards program.

2020 Mom and the PNMHS created the annual Maternal Mental Health Innovation Awards to recognize impactful programs for their leadership in supporting maternal mental health; and to share innovative models that have the potential to scale and promote national change in a rapid and effective manner. Up to 1 in 5 women will encounter maternal mental health disorders, such as postpartum depression, during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

The Award Winners cover three categories:

Innovative Programs in Care
Clinical or Non-clinical care models with proven outcomes for addressing MMH and feasibility for broad adoption.

WINNER: POEM (Perinatal Outreach & Encouragement for Moms) is a free-of-charge maternal mental health support program in Central Ohio whose services include: peer mentoring, support groups and access to perinatal mental health clinicians.

Innovative Community Solutions
Leadership and communication that brings focus to maternal mental health and sustainable engagement.

WINNER: Mothers Strong collaborative is working to strengthen and promote maternal depression systems of care available to all women and their families in Butte County, CA.

Innovation in Policy and Advocacy
National, state or local legislative or regulatory advocacy efforts with impactful results stemming from passage and/or implementation.

WINNER: StrongMom StrongBaby is an awareness and advocacy campaign in Pennsylvania that creates a pathway to service for mothers with postpartum depression and their infant.

The award submissions were reviewed by an esteemed panel of six judges.

The Honorable Mentions in each category are: NorthShore University HealthSystem (Programs in Care), Jewish Family & Children's Service Ma'oz Bloom Program (Community Solutions) and Spectrum Healthier Communities (Policy and Advocacy).

The Award Winners and Honorable Mentions are being recognized for their exemplary programs and initiatives which move past barriers to facilitate the delivery of care to women with maternal mental health disorders. To further their work, each of the first place winners will receive $3,000 and the honorable mention winners will receive $1,000.

Awards will be presented at the PNMHS Conference on November 8, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois, where first place winners will also present their programs. In addition, 2020 Mom will host webinars featuring the programs of each individual first place & honorable mention winner beginning in December.
