Global ground-based signal intelligence system market

The systems that are installed onto combat vehicles or kept as stand-alone systems to track, identify, and locate the presence of enemy infantry, their communication systems, and other incoming threats are termed as ground-based signal intelligence systems. Continuously evolving battlefield requirements demand for better and advanced intelligence systems that could protect the lives of soldiers and assist in identifying and interpreting enemy related information. This has led to many countries collaborating with vendors to develop newer and more advanced systems.

According to Moutushi Saha, a lead analyst at Technavio for defense research, “The BAE Systems, received a contract from the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency toward Computational Leverage Against Surveillance Systems. In 2016, it unveiled its newly developed lightweight, handheld tactical sensor. The situation awareness capability of the soldiers was enhanced as the device helped them to understand radio frequency signals. The sensor, coupled with cognitive processing algorithms, can be deployed as an electronic warfare technology to detect, identify, and track multiple interfering signals, such as enemy's communication signal jammers, across a wide spectrum in the evolving battlefield environment.”

Global airborne signal intelligence system market

The systems that are installed on military aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to track, identify, and locate enemy aircraft and any other form of incoming attack are called airborne signal intelligence systems. Militaries worldwide are focusing on incorporating aircraft specifically designed for SIGINT to their fleet, apart from installing SIGINT and ELINT on their existing aircrafts.

“One of the major contributors to the airborne segment is the use of SIGINT systems by unmanned aircraft systems for crucial military tasks. The US Army, in May 2015, entered into a contract with BAE Systems for the incorporation and engineering services of 12 Tactical Signals Intelligence Payload sensors on the Army's MQ-1C Gray Eagle,” says Moutushi.

Global naval vessel-based signal intelligence system market

Naval vessel-based signal intelligence systems are those that are installed on naval ships, submarines, and UUVs to track, identify, and locate enemy naval vessels and any other form of incoming attacks, including torpedoes or missiles. Many navies across the globe have commenced programs to upgrade their existing ships and develop new naval ships with increased ISR capabilities.

The US Navy, in 2013, signed a USD 46 million contract with Boeing's subsidiary, Argon ST, to deliver seven SIGINT systems to the navy's surface combat ships. The Ship’s Signal Exploitation Equipment (SSEE) increment E program, also called as SSEE-E program, developed a tactical cryptologic system (TCS) that can perform all signal processing functions necessary for acquiring, identifying, locating, and analyzing signals for external and internal information. SSEE-E also performs real-time SIGINT exploitation and geo-location throughout a wide range of target signals, and a backend subsystem that executes non-real-time mission management and analysis.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s market research analysts in the global signal intelligence system market report are:
