HSS Orthopedics At Stamford Health Expands Services

STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The national leader in orthopedics and the largest hospital in Fairfield County today advanced their collaboration by opening the inpatient surgical unit of HSS Orthopedics at Stamford Health. The collaboration previously introduced a sports rehabilitation facility at Chelsea Piers and outpatient surgery at the Tully Health Center.

The opening ceremony was led by Brian G. Grissler, President and CEO, Stamford Health, who was joined by Louis A. Shapiro, President and CEO, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), to mark the important next step in the collaboration between the two organizations. The two leaders cut a ribbon officially opening the HSS Orthopedics at Stamford Health surgical inpatient unit at Stamford Hospital.

In February of this year, the two organizations announced their unique collaboration to advance orthopedic services available to communities in Connecticut and New England, beginning with the commencement of outpatient orthopedic services performed at Stamford Health's Tully Health Center.

"We opened our new hospital just a year ago and are pleased to see this strategic and innovative relationship with HSS already become a reality," said Mr. Grissler. "Building upon our recognized levels of service, Magnet status nursing and our new hospital, this collaboration will further elevate the level of orthopedic services for residents across the region."

Under the collaboration, Stamford Health adopted HSS best clinical practices across the entire orthopedic surgery line. Complementing these practices is Stamford Health's philosophy of providing the finest care across the entire healthcare spectrum - from prevention and wellness to diagnosis, treatment and ongoing support - which aligns closely with the HSS mission.

"HSS has had a presence in Connecticut for nearly 20 years and we are pleased to have created a collaboration with Stamford Health to enable both organizations to better serve patients, right in their own backyards," said Mr. Shapiro. "The collaboration through HSS Orthopedics at Stamford Health ensures the patient care provided here meets our uncompromising standards, with the convenience and comfort of the gorgeous new Stamford Hospital building."

The new 40,000-square-foot unit encompasses the entire 5(th) floor of the new Stamford Hospital, allowing a greater number of inpatient orthopedic surgical cases. To date, HSS Orthopedics at Stamford Health provided only outpatient surgeries at Tully Health Center. The new inpatient unit consists of two operating rooms, four pre-op beds, 12 recovery beds and 19 inpatient rooms as well as a rehabilitation gym. Approximately 50 staff are being hired to oversee patient care on this floor.

HSS has been ranked No.1 for orthopedics in the U.S. for the past eight consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report and is consistently recognized for successful outcomes as well as the lowest infection, complication and revision rates. HSS has provided pre-, post- and non-surgical care in Connecticut since 2001. The 20,000-square foot HSS Outpatient Center at Chelsea Piers Connecticut continues to provide these services as well as the neighboring HSS Sports Rehab at Chelsea Piers Connecticut (provided by Stamford Health).
