Although the country was among the first countries in the region to launch 3G mobile services, the development of LTE services has suffered from delays. Nevertheless, Telecom Egypt in August 2016 received the country's first unified services licence, which allows it to offer LTE services.

The remaining three MNOs (Orange Egypt, Vodafone Egypt and Etisalat Misr) rejected the terms associated with the LTE licences offered, but they signed up for licenses after these terms were adjusted. Commercial services are expected to be launched progressively further into 2017. The licences also enable the providers to offer virtual fixed-line services using the infrastructure of Telecom Egypt.

This report outlines the major developments in the Egyptian mobile market, including updated statistics and profiles of the operators.
