Bentall Kennedy’s Property Management Team Launch Innovative Recycling Program to Keep One Million Pounds of Food Waste Out of Landfills by 2020

Bentall Kennedy is breaking new ground and closing the loop on food waste through an innovative technology partnership with Hop Compost and Waste Solutions Canada that will divert almost 1,000,000 pounds of food waste from landfills by 2020. Starting in 2018, Bentall Kennedy will roll out the organics collection service to 18 of its properties in the Greater Toronto Area. This new technology converts food waste into soil to be re-purposed for landscaping at participating properties.

“Bentall Kennedy is the first property management company in Ontario to engage with Hop Compost for this type of organics program, which is really exciting for us,” said Michelle Brown, Vice President, Property Management for Bentall Kennedy. “We are taking a new approach and looking beyond 'business as usual' solutions in the waste management industry.”

Hop uses patented technology to develop Canada’s first inner-city compost facilities, where this waste is converted into nutrient-rich organic compost.

“Hop’s technology will eliminate up to 85 per cent of the hauling to save food waste in Toronto. Finished compost will be produced in just 11 days, free of methane and odour, enabling a new era of efficiency in our local food system,” said Kevin Davies, Hop Compost’s founder and CEO.

Bentall Kennedy’s work with Hop Compost began through its partnership with Waste Solutions Canada, a national management firm in the waste and recycling industry. As an unbiased third-party, the company leverages buying power, innovative technology, and national resources to deliver credible data, cost reduction solutions and improved environmental stewardship.

“Waste Solutions Canada is positioned at the forefront of the Canadian waste management industry that is evolving and ready for invigoration,” said Jason Wilcox, managing partner of Waste Solutions Canada. “We are very pleased to be partnered with Bentall Kennedy and Hop Compost and, by delivering innovative technology and improved efficiency, we are aligned on driving environmental stewardship, maximizing diversion, and contributing to greater sustainability.”
