ST Electronics Secures US$72M Contract for Smart Sensor Network

Singapore Technologies Electronics Ltd (ST Electronics) today announced that its subsidiary, Telematics Wireless Ltd (Telematics Wireless), has been awarded a contract worth US$72m (about S$98m) by Arad Technologies Ltd (Arad) for the supply of a smart sensor network that will transform global cities such as China, Europe, India and the US, as well as enable more efficient city planning. This is in line with ST Electronics’ strategic approach in leveraging its capabilities in smart technologies to drive implementation of smart city initiatives worldwide.

Under the agreement, Telematics Wireless will supply Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) radio transceivers for Arad’s AMR solutions over a period of six years. When fully deployed by Telematics Wireless at the end of 2021, more than 18 million wireless sensors will enhance smart cities globally. Currently, there are more than 15 million wireless sensors installed in cities globally.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Arad Technologies to deliver smart city solutions that transform cities efficiently and power smart city planning. This reinforces our global track record and continued strategic growth of our smart technologies,” Mr Ravinder Singh, President of ST Electronics said. “Leveraging our deep engineering expertise, we have embedded advanced, cutting-edge technologies in water resource management systems that help to improve city planning and enhance operational efficiencies as well as cost savings.”

As with the growing trend towards the adoption of smart meters for efficient utility monitoring, smart AMR meters will be increasingly used. Radio transceivers are a key component in smart AMR meters which are used to monitor water, electricity or gas usage. ST Electronics’ AMR radio transceivers feature an innovative technology that incorporates all electronics, battery and antenna in the meter register without the need for external wires of connection. This results in greater reduction in installation and maintenance costs. The radio transceivers are also able to operate up to 10 years on internal battery, and is resistant to radio interference.

Arad is a world leader in the supply of smart water meters. The AMR radio transceivers supplied through this contract will be deployed with Arad's AMR solutions in various global markets. Together with Arad's smart management software, the field-proven AMR radio transceivers will provide precise monitoring of all utility vital signs, and will alert utility providers to faults, such as leakages.
