Triune Specialty Trailers Debuts Mobile Emergency Room Just Time for Flu Season
WARREN, Mich., Feb. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- A $48.1 million expansion project is underway at Ascension Health's St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren. The hospital is remaining open during construction--due in part to a unique solution, the Mobile Integrated Health Unit (MIHU), which serves as the hospital's "Fast Track Emergency Room."
Built by Madison Heights-based Triune Specialty Trailers, the MIHU looks from the outside like a normal semi-trailer. The MIHU operates on a hydraulic system that powers special panels. When activated, the panels expand the trailer to three times its normal size, providing more than 1,000 square feet of interior space. It has been positioned adjacent to the hospital and is outfitted just like any emergency medical facility.
The Fast Track Emergency Room has twelve patient bays and will operate throughout construction. Hospital staff treat patients in the Fast Track ER if the available inpatient space is full. Patients who enter into the MIHU rarely notice that the space is actually part of a specialty trailer, and doctors and nurses are able to do their critical jobs without interruption from construction. Special care was given to constructing the mobile ER with the same safety and health standards required in a regular hospital building.

After construction is complete and the MIHU is no longer consistently needed in the Fast Track ER role, it will be used for mobile community outreach and disaster response.
