Maggie Hardy Magerko Donates Metal Detectors to Brownsville School District

Math. Science. English. Active Shooter Drill. Gym. That has become the unfortunate reality for today’s schoolchildren. Another reality is that despite all the best intentions, many school districts lack the funds to deter and detect the weapons that are used in these violent incidents. That’s why Maggie Hardy Magerko, President and Owner of 84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, yesterday presented the Brownsville School District with a $7,300 check to purchase metal detectors to protect the children of Fayette county.

Following the thwarted shooting scare at Uniontown High School last month and the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Magerko felt compelled to do something to avoid any other situations in her backyard.

“I don’t know all the answers to preventing violence in our schools, but I do know that we have to do more,” said Magerko. “I can’t overstate my gratitude to the dedicated police officers and security guards who help protect our children and educators day in and day out, but they can’t do it alone. It makes me absolutely sick that school safety has become a political issue and that people like me have to step in and help. Safety should never be a choice; it’s common sense and absolutely necessary.”

According to Brownsville School District Superintendent, Keith Harbauer, one metal detector will be installed at Brownsville High School and one at Brownsville Middle School.

Harbauer went to say, “We are thrilled to have someone like Maggie Hardy Magerko take an avid interest in the safety and well-being of our students and staff. Her generous contributions will positively impact 1600 people every day. In order for education to occur, students and staff need to feel safe. Now our community and school district can provide another layer of safety, thanks to her financial support.”
