According to Technavio analysts, the global rotorcraft avionics market will grow at a CAGR of around 4% during the forecast period. The advancement in avionics leading to enhanced safety features is a major factor driving the market’s growth.

The helicopters generally operate in remote applications and should abide by both visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) for day and night operations. These rotorcrafts are usually operated at very low altitudes in visually challenging conditions and unfamiliar locations. This can be stressful for flight crews. Statistics reveal that low-visibility and high-workload situations are among the common causes for CFIT accidents.

In this report, Technavio highlights the penetration of ADS-B in the commercial and civil rotorcraft industry as one of the key emerging trends driving the global rotorcraft avionics market:

Penetration of ADS-B in the commercial and civil rotorcraft industry

ADS-B uses information/signals from global navigation satellite systems to offer information regarding air traffic to pilots and controllers. The aircraft avionics receives these signals, and the aircraft's precise location is transmitted to the air traffic controller as well as pilots. The avionics systems of rotorcraft convert the location into a digital code and combine the information with the data, such as aircraft type, speed, flight number, and rotorcraft's turn, ascent, and descent information generated from the flight monitoring system.

The code that contains the information is broadcast from avionics almost every second. In contrast, the currently used radar refreshes data once in more than five seconds. While time savings of more than four seconds may seem brief to some, these savings allow greater accuracy in determining the position of the aircraft.

“The ADS-B present in the ground station can communicate with the ADS-B equipped in the aircraft up to 200 miles through broadcasting and aid in improving the situational awareness of the pilot with accurate data. Such information also assists pilots in determining their position with respect to the terrain even in visually challenging conditions,” says a senior analyst at Technavio for research on aerospace components.

The system improves the air traffic monitoring capacity significantly due to its data accuracy through satellite-based positioning. Finally, the use of ADS-B will also help pilots to maintain a safe distance between rotorcrafts.
