Wireless Innovation Forum Congratulates JTNC on Mandating SCA 4.1 Standard, Updates on Supporting Projects

The Wireless Innovation Forum (WInnForum), a non-profit international industry association dedicated to driving the future of radio communications and systems worldwide, would like to congratulate the Joint Tactical Networking Center (JTNC) on the announcement that SCA 4.1 has been entered into the Department of Defense Standards Registry as the mandated tactical radio standard (http://bit.ly/2ptDwuW).

In January 2015, the JTNC announced publication of the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) 4.1 Draft, an architecture framework developed to assist in the development of software defined radio communication systems, capturing the benefits of recent technology advances which are expected to greatly enhance interoperability of communication systems and reduce development and deployment costs. The Forum’s CC SCA worked with the JTNC to develop those technical recommendations and WInnForum Standards for SCA 4.1 since November 2013. Following the release of the draft standard in January 2015 the CC SCA also adjudicated issues submitted by the general public and submitted subsequent recommendations.

The JTNC announced publication of the final SCA 4.1 specification in August 2015; available through the JTNC website: http://jtnc.mil/sca/Pages/default.aspx. The Forum endorsed the SCA 4.1 in December of the same year (http://bit.ly/2GP1RTi).

As a group focused on advancing radio technologies that support essential or critical communications worldwide, the Forum and its membership has been supporting the creation and evolution of the SCA since 1997 (see the history of the SCA here: http://www.wirelessinnovation.org/history-of-the-sca). From 2002 to 2009, the Forum was active in supporting the advancement of the SCA and related specifications around the world, first through its Mobile Working Group (2002 to 2005) and then through the SCA Work Group (2005 to 2009). The Forum had endorsed SCA 4.1’s predecessor, SCA 2.2.2, in September 2008 (http://bit.ly/2GORRge) which is currently in deployment in over 500,000 software defined radios worldwide (http://bit.ly/SCAStandards).

In 2010, the Forum created the Coordinating Committee on International SCA Standards (now the Software Defined Systems Committee) with a mandate to support the harmonization of the SCA standards for the mutual benefit of all stakeholders. Entering the SCA 4.1 into DISR as the mandated standards confirms the years of work invested by the Forum membership and the well over 2000 hours volunteered by Forum member representatives in developing solutions contained in the standard.

Since the initial publication of SCA 4.1, the Forum has launched supporting projects including the SCA 4.1 Requirements Allocation, Objectives, and Verification Criteria document, completed March 2017 (http://bit.ly/2ufPWLV) and the current SCA 4.1 Applications Verification Work Group (http://www.wirelessinnovation.org/sca-41-applications-verification). The latter project is expected to be completed this summer.
