Water treatment applications have been increasing lately, owing to the strong demand for freshwater resources. Water recycling is a multi-stage process in wastewater treatment plants. The primary treatment of water involves the removal of sediments and other high-density particles in the water that tend to settle down. The technique majorly employed for this process is sedimentation. Water is collected in huge tanks and is allowed to settle down for hours to days depending on the processing procedure.

Secondary treatment in wastewater is a major part of the process, where a majority of the biological content has to be processed to reduce the load on the tertiary processing stage. Moving-bed-biofilm reactors are used at this stage. They have proven to be an effective solution with a minimal land requirement. Owing to the increased emphasis on environmental protection, concerned government authorities and environmental organization are enacting wastewater discharge standards for all the end-user industries.

The Chinese government is promoting economic growth and urbanization, which, in turn, will increase the demand for improvement in wastewater infrastructure and the usage of water treatment chemicals. Industrial waste discharge and agriculture are considered as two of the major polluting factors affecting China's water resources. The government has begun to concentrate more on the reorganization of the pollutant treatment measures, including water and industrial wastewater treatment.
