Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Wins Preventive Cardiovascular Nursing Association's First-ever Institutional Award

MADISON, Wis., June 13, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- With a record of producing top-notch cardiovascular nursing leaders and conducting nursing research, the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing was a clear choice for the Preventive Cardiovascular Nursing Association's first-ever Institutional Award for Excellence in Promoting Cardiovascular Care.

PCNA's Institutional Award is designed to recognize organizations that have shown outstanding cardiovascular nursing leadership and practice. In concert with PCNA's mission to promote nurses as leaders in cardiovascular disease prevention and management, the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing has spent decades educating nurses and conducting nursing science with the aim of reducing health disparities and improving the quality of care and outcomes for cardiovascular patients.

Johns Hopkins supports PCNA's mission through community engagement, scientific investigation, technology-assisted interventions, education, and advocating for policy initiatives to understand and address not just the whys but the how's of cardiovascular health. With their innovations and exhaustive work with some of the most vulnerable populations, their nurse researchers have helped turn cardiovascular disease, once deemed a death sentence, into an illness that can often be managed. And where it cannot, the focus turns to palliative care that maintains dignity, comfort, and quality of life.

Johns Hopkins has also shaped some of cardiovascular nursing's greatest leaders, including Martha Hill, PhD, RN, FAAN, the first nurse president of the American Heart Association.

"Johns Hopkins is preparing and fostering a new generation of nurses who engage in interdisciplinary education and research in cardiovascular health promotion for vulnerable populations," said PCNA president Jo Ann Eastwood, PhD, RN, CNS, ACNP-BC, FAHA, FAAN. "We recognize them for their pivotal role in nursing leadership in cardiovascular care by awarding them our first-ever Institutional Award."
