BALLWIN, Mo., July 3, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Wolf H. Stapelfeldt, M.D. is recognized by Continental Who's Who as Pinnacle Professional of The Year in the field of Anesthesiology in recognition of his role as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine at Saint Louis University.

Having attained over twenty five years of experience in the healthcare field, Dr. Wolf H. Stapelfeldt is well-regarded for his outstanding contributions to the field. Subsequent to his tenure at the Cleveland Clinic as Chairman of the Department of General Anesthesiology, Dr. Stapelfeldt assumed the role of Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Talis Clinical, LLC, an information management company spun off from the Cleveland Clinic. Talis Clinical's software distills and analyzes the most important data sources in real time to guide physicians in decision-making within the high stress environment of the operation rooms and intensive care units. This clinical decision support application was recognized as one of the top ten innovations in Medicine during the 2014 Cleveland Clinic Innovation Summit.

Serving in several different capacities at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Stapelfeldt recalls most notably his role as Chairman of Transplantation Anesthesiology at its Jacksonville, Florida location, which at that time, grew into one of the largest liver transplant programs in the country. Additionally, he has served as Vice Chairman for Education in the Mayo Clinic's Department of Anesthesiology in Florida, as well as Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Physiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Early in his career, Dr. Stapelfeldt attained his Medical Degree Summa Cum Laude from the University of Ulm, School of Medicine in Ulm, Germany. Thereafter, Dr. Stapelfeldt would go on to complete his residency in Anesthesiology and fellowship in Physiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

He most recently introduced the 'SLUScore', a novel method to quantify less than normal blood pressure, a common occurrence under anesthesia, with regard to its risk for adverse outcome. Automatically tracking patients' SLUScores during surgery, in an effort to identify and minimize harmful exposures to lower than sufficient blood pressure, holds the promise of significantly reducing serious complications, including death, which all too commonly ensue in the days and weeks after surgery.

In recognition of his professional accolades, Dr. Stapelfeldt was the recipient of the Edward C. Kendall Award from the Mayo Clinic in 1988. Additionally, as already mentioned above, his work on clinical decision support was recognized with a Top Ten Innovation in Medicine Award at the 2014 Cleveland Clinic Innovation Summit.
